Is it normal for a woman to pat herself on the head all the time?

I see a lot of Black women patting themselves on the head. They do it while driving, at work, everywhere and all the time. Why do they do this? Anyone else notice?

Sweetie our hair is a bit different a few things may be happening

    1. New relaxer may still be burning
    2. Braids are too tight
    3. Afro may need to be fluffed or pull a curl into place
    4. She may be adjusting a bobby pin

    • Don't know about the relaxer thing, most times they either have braids or are wearing a weave.

Braids too tight, possible, but that won't account for those many who have a weave.

      Afro - nah see above

Bobby pin, I guess if she needs to keep the wig or weave in place.

FWIW my friend told me its because Black women don't wash their hair but once or twice a month so it may be dirty.

        • You must have a good weave

Our hair is way different. We add oil, grease, moisturizer, etc to our hair to keep it from not getting dry . You probably wash yours to get rid of the oil your hair naturally make. AA Women also make natural oil just a tadbit. By the the average cosmetologist would tell you not to wash your hair everday. It dries out the scalp....

What's wrong with you? Are you that bored that is all you notice of the world around you? Or just dense? My neighbor juggles oranges while jumping trampoline! Beat that!

    • Bored? Nope...its just after seeing person after person beating themselves on the head it kinda stands out as odd.

At work, in the grocery store, driving in the car next to me, walking down the street, at the shopping mall, everywhere...I'm like WTF? Then I notice they are all Black females....so I asked the question.

Do you wear a weave too? Don't you get headaches from hitting yourself on the head all day?

I do a lot of protective styling.... my head is always needs to be patted. We only get headaches when the style is too tight. After the hair loosens up we continue to pat to keep the style lasting and neat. As scratching can and will cause lose strands and less touching of the strands to have more porosity and less damage

It's the reason we keep weaves and such in. It's a form of styling to keep our actual hair protected. Well really so that we don't keep messing with our hair. For example, when we get weaves, we get our hair cornrowed. We don't touch our hair anymore besides the occasional scratch. Our hair is protected by the weave.

Weave, braids, plaits, twists, etc either too tight, just plain itchy or new growth.
