Is it normal for an up flush toilet pump to periodically activate for no reason

My up flush toilet pump in my basement occasionally starts pumping for no apparent reason. No one has used it or flushed it for hours, or even days, and it still decides to activate and start pumping as if someone just flushed. I'm wondering if this is indicative of a problem with the pump, or if it's actually supposed to do that?

That's called ghost flushing. It's perfectly normal, but usually means something small could be wrong with the plumping.

Here's a link to a site that addresses it. ;)

Is there a check valve installed? If so, I would take a look to make sure it's closing all the way, some water from another source may be running back and activating the pump.

  • I've heard from people that their toilets flush randomly. But they believe they have a ghost in their houses

It's not the only toilet in my house, obviously. As I mentioned, it's the one in the basement, which doesn't get used very often.
