Is it normal for me to be obsessed with one thing?

I just seem to throw myself into whatever topic I’m interested in. In recent years it’s been Hamilton, Camp Camp, Detroit:Become Human, and now Borderlands. I just throw myself into each thing and love every little detail about each thing, but then when a new thing comes along, I totally forget about it at the drop of a hat.

    I do too.

The problem I run into a lot is when I talk to people who are die-hard-fans of one specific thing and secretly challenges you to a contest of who knows more that ends with them being condescending about your interest in the topic to begin with.

    Example:
Hardcore Fan: Hey, you listen to The Beatles?

Me: Oh, I heard a few songs, they're great. I like 'All You Need is Love'.

Hardcore Fan: Just GREAT!? Pfft. All you need is love wasn't even their best song, have you heard Strawberry Fields, now that's a song and blah blah blah blah blah....

    Me: ....... please stop.

And these conversations, 90% of the time, ends with the hardcore fan saying, " You're not a true ________," it could be anything from music lover, gamer, whatever. It's very annoying and so pretentious.

Yeah, the cultists always have their idea of what "True" is.
At first I thought it was just heavy metal fans but come to find out, people argue over what is true jazz or even true disco. Now, you KNOW somewhere on the web, people probably argue over what is "true" Christmas music.

There is some music forum I get on and holy crap, that is about 1/2 of the arguments on the forum, junk about the Beatles. Bunch of old geezers arguing about some boy band from 50 years ago. It gets worse than when someone on here creates yet another thread about weird fetishes.

Usually it is best to keep one's interest to him/herself.

Obsession (i.e. passionate interest) is how you experience something to the fullest, and rack up genuine experiences, skills, and wisdom in life. You take advantage of your temporary interest in something, and you delve into it head-on until you get bored with it.

I think that at least in our current paradigm, "obsession" carries a level of negative connotation. Yay or nay?

I'll say normal for this one. Many people have an obsession of some sort, but be aware that many don't like when you talk about your obsession. They believe this is an act of annoyance. I have personally been there before.

  • I’m the same way plus my attention span is bad. But with my memory only some stuff sticks and that’s usually car stuff so I guess it interests me enough to stay. I could talk about cars all day before I can tell you absolutely anything about what I just learned yesterday or even what I ate yesterday.
