Is it normal for stray cats to wander into your house like they own the place?

I was packing for a flight to visit my parents for a week and a stray cat wandered in meowing at me like I was its owner or something, and I couldn't get it out of the apartment. I was late for the shuttle bus so I locked up my place and left with the cat in the bathroom. My plan was to call my friend to open a window from the balcony but I couldn't reach him. I guess I am wondering if it can survive on toilet water.

No it can't survive on toilet water. Call the police and an animal shelter to break in and save the cat :(... if you had time to post this on here while on vacation, you certainly have time to take those 2 steps to save this cat!

You are an idiot, of course it can't. Why didn't you just put it outside? You will come home to a dead or starving cat, unless you've had the sense to contact someone who can open a window for the poor thing.

I have my doubts about whether this is true, but I suppose a cat won't starve to death in a week (as long as it can get water). You should really do something though.
