Is it normal for your heart to beat slow and hard for a few secs when startled?

Is it normal if you become really frightened and startled (like by a loud noise, or if you have a near-miss accident) for your heart to beat slow and hard for a few seconds (with shortness of breath) before it begins to beat hard and fast? or does everyone elses heart just immediately beat hard and fast? mine takes a few seconds of slow, hard beat if i get really startled before it speeds up to normal and during this time i get a lot of shortness of breath. i'm 29/m and had all cardiac tests done for an unrelated matter, but doc never saw this on any monitor because it only happens on the occasion that i get genuinely startled

    I would say it's normal...

I do have a heart condition(nothing too serious) so what I say might not represent for a "normal" person

I'll pay attention to what you mentioned and tell you if I experience the same^^

Well if you are 29 and have had "all cardiac tests" done, that unrelated matter must be something related your heart or something that might affect it. Because tests like that are not common for your age group.

If that is the case, what is normal, healthy and safe for me, might not be for you, and you should let your doctor know right away, if you haven't already.

no, my tests all came back normal, it was just a precautionary thing for some issue i was having that turned out to be unrelated to the heart.
this is an entirely different matter. i just want to know if this is something that other people experience or not.
