Is it normal groomers wont let you watch your animal?

I don't understand this. Why would they want you to not be near your animal? My vet never makes me leave the room when they are examining my pet.

However when I go to the groomer they say I MUST leave the pet in their care, for an hour, where they have a bunch of other animals running free like dogs, cats, ferrets and so on. My cat only likes a few selected people and it is never around other animals.

If I left my animal in the grooming room, in a pet store for an hour with people and animals it does not know I do not see it ending well. How do groomers believe its a good idea? My cat is skittish as hell and doesn't trust strangers.

My cat has long fur so I really wanted to get him groomed. However they refuse to do so unless I leave him in their care for an hour. What could they possibly be planning to do to it without me seeing?

    • What is sus? Its at pet-smart. I never took my animal in for grooming because they refused to let me stay with my animal. I told them my cat is very skittish and they said it didn't matter because that was the policy. They also trimmed all different types of animals in the same room. So I don't really trust leaving my cat their by himself.

        "Suspicious"

I'm wondering why they want 'special secret me time' with your pussy.

I think you should look for a different groomer. This is precisely why I tell people they ought to start washing and brushing their pets when they're very young to get them acclimated to experience.

    • He doesn't mind grooming. He just hates everyone who isn't me, my mother, my dad or my brother. I got him when I was 15 and now I am 20 going to be 21. So he only trusts the people who raised him. He does hate me trying to clip his nails though and I tried using the pedinail thing. Which is like a miny sander that shaves the tip off. I thought it would be safer than trying to clip them and accidentally clipping the soft part.

This probably isn't good, but I use regular nail clippers on my Siamese cat, Andrew. Whenever I clip my nails Andrew likes to watch so I just grab him and do his nails too. He doesn't seem to mind too much then I give him a kiss and some treats and he's fine. I also like to brush and scratch his fur til he starts purring for good measure.

Sounds fishy to me. They are probably restraining the cat in some way they think you wont approve of. I get my cats nails trimmed and the groomer never asks me to leave. I assume most people who leave their pets to get groomed do so simply because they have something else to do and it can take an hour, but if your pet reacts better having you there, Id find one that doesn't have a problem with it.
My mother in law left her elderly dog with a groomer and it fell off the table and broke its leg, she later had to put it to sleep because it wasn't ever going to heal properly.

Take your pet to a professional groomer. My mother's dog, we used to take to a pet store. Not only did they not know what they were doing, but I was concerned that one of them was mistreating my mother's dog. Her dog has now been seeing a professional groomer, who has groomed show dogs for years. She knows what she is doing. The back area is open so, there isn't much mystery as to what is happening to your pets. We like her and trust her. The dog likes her. It's a nice arrangement.
