I live in a very small ground floor studio apartment with a very large window by my bed (the apartment is so small that the window would still be by my bed pretty much anywhere I moved the bed except by the doorway). I had fallen asleep clothed, with the light on and the metal shutters open. I hate closing them - they're a bit stiff, and it lets in mosquitoes.

I was woken at around 6am this morning by a man tapping on my window and trying to get my attention. At first I had thought he wanted to alert me to a problem and I nearly opened the window, but then to my horror, he took his penis out and started rubbing it. I drew my (flimsy, white, overly-long) curtains and he wouldn't go away. He kept staring at me and rubbing his penis, staring at me then passing from one side of my window to another. Aside from feeling disgusted and insulted, I felt trapped and concerned he might find a way to break the window. I called the police... the man saw me on the phone and left... the police arrived later and there was nobody for them to arrest and I felt stupid... I had thought about getting a photo of the man so I'd have evidence but I didn't want to provoke him, and the idea of snapping a stranger with his penis out is just unthinkable to me.

Was I exaggerating to call the police? I have this nagging voice in my head telling me he was probably just a harmless drunk whom I should have ignored, and chastising me for wasting police time. He had gone away by the time the police arrived...

    It was good you called the cops though next time getting a photo would help and theres nothing wrong with taking one.

    Back when I was a teenager I caught some dude doing that shit by my window. I sent my dog, Blackie after him. She chased him into the woods and came back with one of his shoes. She seemed proud of herself. I honestly should've called the cops though. XD

    Don't be so shy about taking a picture if it happens again. If you're concerned about him trying to break-in if you do, then keep a baseball bat by the side of your bed. Someone trying to get through a shattered window is pretty vulnerable to a whack upside the head. In fact, having a weapon of some sort handy wouldn't be a bad idea in any case, since it sounds like your bedroom is very vulnerable and there are loads of weird people in the world.

    Taking a photo of a guy with his dick out in this sort of situation isn't pervy at all; you're simply gathering evidence of a crime.

      I didn't think so at the time. My mum said on the phone that I should have pointed and laughed. Then he would have left pretty fast. Never underestimate the power of a pointing, laughing girl over a fragile male ego. It's funny how penises are used as weapons and indicators of dominance when they (and everything associated with them) are actually so fragile. A man might destroy you by raping you, but few things will hurt him like a kick in the balls.

          Well there's the fact that penises and testes are so sensitive, many men have sperm count/quality issues, erection problems, insecurity about size... self-esteem issues related to all of the above...

          What I mean is that it's sensitive stuff, male reproductive equipment and the psyche that it influences, for all the damage it can do.

            But women don't have self esteem issues about their bodies at all right? Only men? What you are saying is true about every human and their body to some extent, why you gotta focus on the penis? I'm pretty happy with mine!

              I guess with women it's about their body in general rather than one part of it. Feminists would say that's because of men, the need to be attractive to men in order to be happy and successful, 'the Patriarchy' etc. The standards of female beauty as dictated by penis. That female body hangups are a direct result of the rule and reign of the penis. It doesn't matter what they look like as long as they look attractive to men, etc.

              I personally think feminism is building castles in the air with this kind of thing. If I want to look beautiful, it's as much for girls as it is for guys, and I want to look beautiful because women CAN be beautiful in ways that men usually aren't. You can make an internally coherent system thay maps onto the world well enough to be taken for an 'understanding' of it, but that doesn't mean it is wholly or partly true.

        There was an Australian flasher who terrorised local young women. One day one of his victims pointed and laughed at his dick (it was very small because he had Klinefelter syndrome) and so he decided to stalk her for a few days and then killed her. They found her body months later in landfill, because he'd hidden her in a dumpster and nobody realised before the bin men came.

        Sorry to be so dramatic but please don't underestimate these people. They are opportunistic and thrive on their victim's fear. That's a dangerous combination. You're better to just protect yourself and call the police. Don't provoke them.
