Is it normal i cant enjoy drawing unless others give feedback?

Like it just feels like wasted time unless people are commenting, but I hardly ever get comments. I post a lot in the art channel of a discord server (and on tumblr and other discords), but I still hardly ever get comments. I feel entitled and whiny, but I just can't feel satisfied with my art unless other people comment on specific things they like. It just feels like I wasted my time, or like my art isnt good enough. I work on them for so, so long and then get so little in return, and it just hurts. I spent around 10 hours on my last piece and only got 2 comments before being buried by another drawing. is it normal to feel this way? Am I just a whiny brat? Thoughts?

It’s normal for people to require validation from randos on the interweb. But it really shouldn’t be.

I sketch and paint because I enjoy it. Make art to express yourself, not to seek out praise from a horde of assholes you've never met and never will.

You really shouldn't rely on that. A lot of people make great art but doesn't get discovered because there's huge competition and you have to be really great at building a platform as well as having the time and energy to build a social media following. Just focus on your art instead and even if you only get 2 comments, if those are good comments then that's great.

We all have egos, so it's normal to want whatever we create to be appreciated and admired by others. It's also normal to seek critiques of our efforts since this can help us to get better. That's particularly important if we're aiming to make money from our creations; in order to get someone to pay for our work, we have to make something there's a market for.

However, people who are truly into art are primarily focused on attempting to express their vision of the world. As long as they have enough money to keep a roof over their head, put food on the table and to buy whatever materials they need for their art, they don't give a damn what others think of their work. Art is something they must do, and they don't need validation.

If you're not getting feedback from the sites you're posting on, then I'd suggest you look for other sites:

It means you're not good enough. You should probably give up on your dreams.

So you’re like an egomaniacal cartoonist? Sounds interesting

    • From my phrasing, I can see where you get that. It's more like I've been out of antidepressants for over a month and I'm paranoid nothing I do is good enough unless several people explicitly tell me it is.
