Is it normal i cut off my best friend after 20 years

I finally bought myself a brand new car for the first time in my life. One of the first things I did was to drop by my best friend’s place (a friend who has been with me since my childhood). He was amazed with all the bells and whistles, especially the dual screens instead of the traditional analog speedometers.

He asked me to take a picture of him in the driver’s seat with his phone, so while I was taking the picture, he slammed the door shut and locked the door. The key was inside the car so he started it up, put it in neutral and floored the pedal, redlining a brand new engine that hasn’t been broken in yet.

I knocked on the window and begged him to stop, but he kept on holding down the pedal and keeping the car on the revlimiter for what felt like forever (around 2-3 minutes), before he turned it off and got out.

By time he got out, I was curled up next to the car with tears in my eyes as holding the redline for 2-3 minutes is bad for any car, especially a brand new one that hasn’t been broken in yet.

He laughed me in the face and said “I gave you an Italian tuneup mate”. I left and never spoke to him again.

Stick a knife in his ass and tell him "I just gave you a Turkish Revenge mate!"

That's an incredibly asshole thing to do. Only an idiot would have forgiven him for that, and you refusing to have any further contact with him seems perfectly reasonable to me.

But the thing is, assholery of that degree rarely comes out of the blue, so I'd almost be willing to bet that over those twenty years you'd seen him pull similar shitty stunts.

If someone behaves like an asshole to others when you're around and you tolerate that or are even amused by it, you can be sure that sooner or later, you're going to be their target.

    • It’s a bit surprising as I recall only one asshole move from his side apart from being the slightly jealous type.

The incident I recall was when he proposed to his girlfriend of 11 years, kept dragging his feet for another 1 year, followed by dumping her for a new one (not my business, but I felt sorry for the woman that he lead on for so long).

What he did to the car certainly sounds like a fit of jealous rage.

It sounds like you're better off without him in your life.

Some people hold on to friends that they've known from young childhood simply because they've known them a long time. I've never really understood that. Sometimes pure chance throws us together with another kid we're completely simpatico with and we grow up and develop in step, but most of the time we grow apart with the passage of time.

The good news is that you've severed contacts with him.

How did you manage to remain friends with this asshole for 20 years? This guy has done shitty things to you for years, right?

Absolutely normal, this would piss me off to no end. The fact that you said he has a jealousy problem definitely makes sense, as this absolutely sounds like something a jealous child would do in a spoiled tantrum. Those types of so-called "friends" are much better out of your life (coming from someone who has had way too many of them in my own life, and kept them around for way too long).

So sorry he did that, and I hope your car is okay! As protective as I am over my own car, I would've had a hard time not ripping the fucker's head off and shitting down his throat (pardon my French, lol)!

    • Thanks mate!

The car is driving well (as for now), but I am fairly certain that this incident has significantly shortened its lifespan.

I bought the car of my dreams and I was planning to grow old with it. This incident has however really wrecked my dreams and I will be looking to trade it in for a new one a couple of years down the road before the warranty expires.

Sorry to hear that. :( At least you did the right thing by cutting that asshole out of your life.
