Is it normal i do not get why some users are bothered by underage users?

I know this site mentions that you must be 18 or older to join but I also notice when someone mentions they are younger than that, certain people get upset that kids are posting. What I do not get is that you cannot enforce age restrictions on the internet. It's not like going to the bar where you have to show ID and even at the bar there are often underage kids sneaking in.
I remember when I was a kid I would go into adult sites all the time and there is no way to prevent it.
I doubt there is any kid who will see the age restrictions and think, "I better not go in there."

Also there are plenty of kids who are mature beyond their age and even more adults who are more immature than most kids.

I only have issues with two kinds of underage users.

    1. The ones who don't know how to behave like mature people.

    2. The very young ones who really shouldn't be exposed to some of the fucked up shit this site has on it.

    • Well I only have one issue with underage users.

      1. They're stupid

        Many are, yes.

However, I can think of...five, off the top of my head, who joined as underage people and were some of the better users on the site.

        • They are filth and they are liars. They joined knowing they were underage, how can we trust people like that.

I agree with number one, but number two isn't the fault of the kids (or this site for that matter), but their parents. It won't do you any good to pity/shield them...

Definitely the parents' fault. There was an 11 year old that used to frequent the chat :/ Myself and another user tried repeatedly to get her banned because it's just not ok...A bit older, I'd be uncomfortable with but not do anything about unless they behaved inappropriately, but 11? I'm sorry, no.

Yeah, it's just sad seeing something like that happen.

I disagree with it being the parents fault. Everyone who doesn't have kids is always like "monitor what your kids do". we live in a world where it is nearly impossible to monitor everything your kids do. (I don't have kids btw)

I don't have kids of my own, but I'm nanny. Years ago, I worked with a family who had a kid who was watching violent porn at the age of 14/15, when his younger siblings (aged 5/6, 7/8) were in the room.

How is that not the parents responsibility to make sure that doesn't happen? If they don't take measures to see it doesn't happen, then yes, they are at fault.

If they were my own kids, you can be sure as hell that would never have happened. Certainly nothing like it happened on my watch.

Watching what your children are exposed to/exposing themselves to online is vital. This isn't even half of it.

In regard to IIN: There's inappropriate content that children just shouldn't be reading. There are also, despite best efforts of some of us, people who would happily prey on the vulnerabilities of younger underage users. I don't mean to try and scare you off, I see you are a new user, but once you've been here for a while, you see these things clearly.

I'm not saying parents shouldn't monitor, causethey should. But it's impossible to monitor everything, and I don't think it's right to blame parents if something is slipping by them

Um, no it's not. There are all kinds of preventative measures that parents can take to shield their kids from unwanted exposure. I disagree with your disagreement.

I agree with you. As long as they are mature then honestly it's no big deal.

Some who are old enough are emotionally stunted and act like children. Not much we can do about them. And this site breeds that sort of behavior.

I don't know why we are assuming maturity and age even correlate very well. Many underage users are annoying, but many other users are annoying too. Likewise, there are many good people in each group. Why analyze it any deeper than that?

Even if underage users were far more likely to be negative contributors, so what? Why wrap IIN up in cotton wool? Why assume we are so special that we need to keep out the riff raff, like some exclusive club?

And why condone immaturity in adults while punishing immaturity in kids? Surely we should have the same rules for both, or maybe even be more leniant when it comes to children.

Maybe the limit, if limts even worked, should be closer to 15. I agree that there is some stuff on here younger kids shouldn't see.

Because I could ruin some impressionable poor kids fucking life, and I'm just not down with that. I talk to people here like they are decision-weighing adults. There is a time and place to sprinkle sugar on my fucking strawberries and it's not here on IIN.

Main issue is that many underage users are stupid.

I don't really care much who's behind the keyboard on a site like this. In fact I think the fact that you don't automatically know everyone's age, race, gender, etc unless they tell you is one of the neat things about the internet.

Behavior does matter, but I'm not convinced the correlation between young people and annoying behavior is even that strong. There's certainly no shortage of stupid and/or obnoxious adults in this world.

Which is to say, I guess I don't really understand why it bothers people either.

It's because (so many of them) pollute the site with their annoying/repetitive questions...

I don't think age is the problem. If you are stupid and immature it's likely a you thing not an age thing.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • To answer your IIN question: It's strange you don't understand why adults are bothered by the presence of children in places designated for adults. It's a very rare thing to find a child who's mature and wise well beyond their years.

Since there is no way to limit visitors by age, perhaps it would make a lot more sense if everyone posting had their age listed. It sure would make it easier to tailor advice to the questions.
One girl I tried to give advice to really needed to get out of her present situation. I suggested moving to another city, start fresh, among other things. She replied that she was 13, so none of what I suggested was of any help and we worked on some solutions that were more age appropriate.
This poor child needed help, if anything on the web can be believed, and in the end she thanked me and was gone.
What is one to do if help is really needed by someone under 18?

    • Listing their age wouldn't work because they can easily lie. That's what I did to get into age limited sites when I was a kid. The age restriction is simply for legal reasons.

I guess in the case of someone under 18 good advice sometimes would be to report certain things to authorities (in cases of abuse)

Yeah, I don't think this person was ready for this site. As a matter of fact, her age shows since she isn't open-minded to others' opinions. I want all of the underage users to dwell on Youtube, Yahoo, literally anywhere but this site.

With too many Children/teen users it will end up like yahoo answers, which makes me wonder why they don't just go there instead.

I get a little worried when I see 22 out of 50some that have never had sex before. What? I thought that nearly everyone had sex either with the opposite sex or with their own sex by the time they were 18. Or am I mistaken?

Personally, I believe the site should ban those based on their maturity level -- not their age. People easily lie; trust me, I'd know. Besides, why is it not okay for a seventeen year old to join, but if their birthday is the next day, they can join then?

Guessing its kind of like this. If someone commits a crime and no one notices they still did it. If someone older followed the rules they might be upset someone else does not have to follow it.
