P.S. I do flush if my urine has a strong odor for whatever reason.

Definitely normal and I do the same, it's a good way to save water, as is keeping a bucket in the shower and using it to fill the toilet cistern. In Australia, the driest inhabited continent on earth and subject to periodic droughts, the same pure drinking water in cities is used to flush toilets and that's just ridiculous.
I do keep the toilet lid closed in case it gets a bit smelly when not flushed and also close it before I flush to prevent bacteria spraying everywhere. I don't get the debate about up or down for toilet seats: what do people think toilet lids are for? Decoration? Just shut the whole thing after use, it is't rocket science
