Is it normal i don't want to get a smartphone?

I have an old cellphone with a camera, touchscreen and it can even access wireless internet but without android and it's pretty slow when online. A lot of people (my parents, coworkers, friends) make fun of me because I don't own a smartphone. I don't want one because I am vulnerable towards internet addiction and with such a phone I'd become obsessed with email checking etc. On the other hand, I feel like an outcast and can't use things like whatsapp or useful car apps. :/

Who makes fun of people for that? I know a few people who still have flip phones but would never tease them about it.

    It's a fucking phone for god's sake.

    • It's probably because many consider having the newest smartphone a status symbol and it's easy to pick on people who differ from the majority.

Yeah, I tend to think those people are ridiculous. It is a wasteful and a horrible thing to encourage. I hate the disposable lifestyle, people should be shamed. Tease them back for being lame.

I have an Android phone now, but back when I still had my BlackBerry my stupid uncle used to make fun of me for it. Of course one must always consider the source, my uncle is an annoying, nerdy real estate agent who thinks hot shit, and always wants to talk shit.

It's weird when I see people with flip phones.

I don't know what "whatsapp" is so maybe I am the wrong person to answer, but I don't think you should feel like an outcast. If you feel like what you have is best for you, that is all that matters. Your friends, family, and coworkers are the ones that have a problem if they are choosing to engage in childish behavior like teasing, and making you feel that way.

    Smartphones are not for everyone.

I have an older smartphone (samsung S3) and it runs well. I don't need a nice smartphone, though, because I already have a MacBook and iPad.

I don't have a smartphone and yes, everybody have one. I would buy one for sure when mine's stop working however.

Doesn't matter to me. If it works for you, you've avoided wasting money.

Good for you. I sometimes wish I'd never gotten a smartphone, and then recently a smarter phone with the swiftness our a ninja in the night. It certainly has not helped me with my internet addiction.
