Is it normal i feel lonely because of my music taste

First, I'm black.
I like many types of music. My main genres are indie, rock, nu metal, industrial, alternative, witch house, edm, experimental trap, cloud rap, trip hop, gangster rap, a variety of ambient music, and a huge load of miscellaneous.

My white friends can relate to me on some of the music, like rock and metal and edm and etc. But immediately begin to judge me and act disgusted if I express any kind of enjoyment for anything of the rap variety.

My black friends enjoy rap with me but judge me for everything else and begin to alienate me when I express interests outside of rap.

I'm not looking for any criticism of any genre because everyone has preferences and some things will appeal to some that don't appeal to others. Everyone has a reason for liking what they like and disliking what they don't. I personally don't like country (minus a few exceptions), mainstream pop, or mainstream rap.

What I don't get is why it seems like such a rare thing to see the beauty in a broad spectrum of music or to at least be open to what makes the different genres appealing.

I have no friends that can closely relate on liking so many different kinds of music.

No one gets my taste in music around me, my two favorite albums are phychadelic folk rock and experimental industrial hip hop, people give me the strangest look when they ask what I'm into, but fuck them, we're the ones with an open mind, open to hearing great new music

I can relate. I don't even have any close neighbours on last.fm. I feel prejudged for my music taste as well, and because of that I tend to avoid talking about music lately. I often do like at least one of the bands or artists my friend likes, but they've rarely ever even heard of who I like. They seem intimidated or skeptical about my taste. It's too bad, because I love talking about music, especially getting into composition and theory. Most people don't wanna listen to you if you mention the word "theory". They think learning more about music will take away its magic, but in reality, it only heightens it.

Be proud of your open mind. Having an eclectic taste makes you a lot more unique than your friends. That's something to admire. (:

You may feel alone but I assure you you're not. There are tons of people, esp on the internet, with eclectic music tastes. Why is this rare? No idea. I like to believe it's because not everyone is inherently an aesthete, or really loves music enough to branch out to diverse genres. I can go on with the reasons

Instead, I'll suggest you get a last.fm account. It's a free website that tracks all the music you listen to (via itunes, ipod, phone, pc, spotify). It not only helps you find new music, but find people with similar music tastes, and similarly diverse tastes too. I just use it for the fancy charts/stats about the music I listen to. They're interesting to look at when I'm bored. eg. this picture displays my top genres listened to in the last 12 months :-) http://oi62.tinypic.com/9qihli.jpg and compared to some people I know my tastes are not even that diverse.

As long as you like it, who cares what anyone else thinks? (:

Me and a lot of my friends listen to anything ranging from rap straight through to death metal. Honestly the play list at work can jump from Iron Maiden to Dr Dre.

The older you get the more opportunities you have to know people with similar tastes. I'm pretty sure you're in highschool right?

I used to like rap when I was in 5th grade and didn't know any better. Yeah I'll buy Ludacris and nelly, because all my friends have em. Like 90% of it is absolute garbage in my opinion. It's almost turned into a religion. People don't know why they like it, they just do. Millions of followers. And Kanye is yeezus! Lol what a joke...

I also listen to all types of different stuff, but there are some styles I don't like too. People I know have some similar interests, but some stuff they won't listen to and some stuff they listen to I don't really care for, if that makes sense. So, I kind of see what you mean. Whatever you do, listen to whatever works for you and listen to it proudly.

In high school, I listened to strictly rock, but I listen to music everyday. For someone who listens and enjoys music as much as me, listening to the same genre gets old and I had to expand my horizons to other genres.

Talk about living in a place where your music is unappreciated, try living in the West Indies and enjoying 60's rock! Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, the Doors or the Who, to name just a few.
Nothing here but Reggae (Bob Marley is OK, but not 24/7!), hip hop crap and disco shit, all played way too loud and poorly.

Or is it, "Be a head"? Sometimes I think she'd sing that.

  • I enjoy everything you mentioned except edm! Check out Orka Veer! You won't be disappointed. My fav songs by him would be Ascending, The Jhp, Sam's Solution. Honestly all of them are good.

    • .... I could sit here and shoot the shit with you on all kinds of music.. :) Don't worry about what people think of what you listen to. You said it yourself everyone has their own tastes and opinions.

      • Well thank you. I'm hoping that I can eventually come across more people who are open minded like this.
