Is it normal i feel sad over moving abroad?

I have a ticket to follow my dreams at a very good university far away. All the years of hard studying is all for this moment. This is the moment that I have been dreaming of, working so hard to secure, yet I feel emptiness and tears rolling down my cheeks while packing my bags.

In two weeks, I will be leaving all my friends and family behind and I will be all alone over 3000 km away from my home. My upcoming 19th birthday will be a lonely and miserable one.

It is called homesickness. I moved from one state to another (just 70 miles) and felt homesick for about two months. You'll be fine. I got bouts of non stop crying and I was 27.

    • Thanks, hoping that I will get over it in a couple of months too. ๐Ÿ˜Š

      It seems hard though.

When I stayed in France for a few months, the first month of my stay was relatively rough mentally. I wasn't necessarily homesick for my family but more so for my friends. The good news is that the internet has made connecting with your loved ones much easier than previously possible.

Moving abroad is an exciting opportunity. Congratulations.

My homesickness is mostly because of my family, but I guess we all have to move out sooner or later. It would just had been so much easier if the distance wasnโ€™t so great.

It's very common to feel that way whenever a cycle in your life ends... you're mourning a life that has made you happy up to now to start a new one that will also make you happy in different ways. All your friends and family will still be there with you and you'll find new friends and chosen family and follow your dream! Wish you the best!

And your birthday will be what you make of it. Buy yourself a sad lonely cupcake and make her happy! Haha and have a Zoom party with your loved ones.

I guess the sadness is a combination of my heart lingering in the past while my mind fears the unknown.

        • General medicine, but I plan to specialize in oncology later on. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Itโ€™s a subject that is very close to my heart, because a close relative of mine lost her battle against cancer.
