Is it normal i hate barbers/salons?

I haven't gotten a haircut at a barber/salon in close to 10 years. It's awkward talking to someone you don't know when you can't even face them, being fussed over so much and being pitched extra services such as washing (already clean hair with no products in it) and styling. I just want it cut and to be out of there.

I cut it myself now and have let friends do it and am fine with the results, but most people tell me to just suck it up and get a haircut and there's no reason to find the experience as awkward as I do.

For the record, I also hate dentist and doctor's visits and avoid them as much as possible. I have no desire to ever get a massage either. I guess I just don't like being touched a lot by strangers.

I do love a wash after a haircut. At the place I go to they use a mint shampoo, and it feels great.

I love going to the hairdressers, or I did before I had to wear a stupid mask all the time.

    • I'm not too meek, I tell them "no thanks", but like any other salesmen, they keep at it and never shut up and accept the word "no". I still don't tell them yes or okay, but I don't want to be asked 100000000 times. No means no the first time.

I started cutting my own hair at 14, like you I just don’t like being touched or fussed over by other people. Plus I don’t trust them.

Doctors and dentists I don’t mind because there’s a medical reason, I’m not sure if they do this for doctors but for dentists some of them have specialists who treat patients with a fear of dentists, maybe that could help you?

I never liked them either. I always did my own hair and the one time I let my mother convince me was about 23 years ago and I hated it. Never again. OK wait, that was the 2nd time. First was before that a friend talked me into something horrific, I won't even mention what I had done
    ....blahhhh and barf

If it has been ten years, how do you know what the experience is? I have never been upselled at a salon and I find it awkward because they don't talk, not because they do. Also, there is usually this giant mirror for you to look at and you can see the person cutting your hair. Not all hair places are the same. But In only cut my hair once a year in average so what do I know.

    • I was dragged along several times as a kid (even hated it then), tried to give it more chances, but most of the time I just hated the experience. I don't mind talking, I just don't like facing away from someone while we talk. Sometimes they faced me towards the mirror, others away. I live in a place where there aren't many options and don't feel it's worth it to drive clear out of my way for a haircut I can do myself or allow a friend to do so I just quit going.

Like I said, I only go one a year so my experience is minimal. But I am pretty easy going. Lots of services don't face you while getting them. Almost all doctors look at a specific body part. Even the dentist is honed on on your mouth but the rest of your face is ignored. And a massage therapist hardly ever talks to your face. I don't think it's the salon specifically as they are pretty personal choices to begin with. Depending on your hair, it can be rather helpful to get a perspective that can be difficult to obtain with your own self. But if you don't require it, you don't require it. But it is done out of stubborn avoidance of the situation, or because you would choose that style regardless of how you get to it?
