i currently have 2 birds and i do have cages for them, however they aren't those stupid peanut sized cages you see in pet stores, both are very big and both my birds have room to fly around.
if i could let them run free everyday i would, but there's so many dangers in a house for a small bird (fans, wires, flying into windows, etc.) i only let them out when i can supervise them which gives them most of the day to play in the house, usually the only time their caged is when it's bedtime.
i'm even leash training them so someday they can come outside with me :) i would let them go if i could, but they've never survived as a wild bird in their life and would die pretty quickly because they wouldn't know how to get food :(
I do the exact same with my two birds.
Both of my birds wings were clipped at first so I could train them/ tame them etc and now one birds flight feathers have grown back and he flys free around the house until bed time or mostly when visitors are here (depends) and my bigger bird (who's feathers are still growing) roams around the house too, and every now and then I take him outside and sit him on a plant or something so he can explore haha :D
I don't eat chicken or other birds either but not becos there caged while being factory farmed but they don't taste like anything it makes me gag and I can't swallow it.
I also became a vegan in college so that makes it easier to avoid the whole eating meat thing.
I think you mean you hate them being caged, not that you actually hate the birds themselves? I hate seeing birds in cages too, how unnatural is that? I"ve known people in Australia to have budgies in cages even though they live in areas where there are plenty of wild ones right outside!
Some animal welfare groups do concern themselves with this, in particular with battery hens
