Is it normal i hate it when so many idiots misuse the word "fetish"?

Anyone else on here get annoyed by how often idiots misuse the word Fetish when what they're really talking about is a general preference? Everything you like sexually is not a fetish. Example: You like blondes over brunettes - that's a preference not a fetish. Anyone else get annoyed by this? It seems like everyday there is someone on here who doesn't know the difference.

I think they're trying to sound edgy and kinky, but it just comes of as redundant and boring instead.

I don't necessarily hate it but I do feel embarrassed for them. Showing one's ignorance on a public forum such as this seems so unnecessary with all the tools available on the internet today.

His other clever one is telling me I look like Jack Black.

It's soooo hurtful having my appearance judged by someone who has never seen me. You have no idea. I seriously cant sleep at night over it.

          :P

You had your picture up a while ago so don't play dumb. I even remember you described the picture with "I look like a crocodile". And yes you do look like Jack Black in that picture. If you don't agree then put another picture of you that does you more justice than the last one.

*waits for the predictable "i don't owe you any explanation" answer that is typical for insecure people.

You sure remember a lot about someone you supposedly hate so much.

The photo was of my eyes and above and photo shopped as a mirror effect. That's hardly enough to have "seen me", sweet cheeks.

I know you're just angling for something to jerk off to. Sad.

Hmm. You can festishize anything. You can definitely fetishize people who are blonde. It doesn't have to be an unusual kink for it to be a fetish. It just has to be an obsession, and it could be an obsession with anything. I agree that it's a word people don't often use in that way, though. We often use it as a tool for exaggeration, in the same way that we use the word "obsession" to refer to a passing interest.

It isn't worth hating over though. All you have to do is enter a conversation armed with the knowledge that sometimes people exaggerate and it's easy to work out what other people mean.

I hate it too. Because I have negative connotations of the word, but I also have extremely unusual attractions, to things like objects and even concepts, but I don't like to call them fetishes, and it's not just lust I feel for them, but also a romantic love. Which are both sexual btw.

Yes. Unfortunately, due to the world of S&M being used in media and fashion, it has lead people misusing the word "fetish". It's annoying. Learn what that word means before you water it down by using it on practically everything.

  • If it's being used that way in a merely colloquial or joking sense, than no, it doesn't bother me. I don't often require that people familiarize themselves with the various academic usages of a term which has simpler colloquial connotations (except for when people say that evolution is "only theory," that bothers me). Of course, what most people mean when they speak of having a liking for some specific physical characteristic (such as 'foot fetishism') what they are really referring to is 'partialism,' and the term 'fetish' has various anthropological, philosophical, and religious uses as well (e.g. Marx's "commodity fetishism," Freud's phallocentric interpretation of religious fetishism, etc.).

This is why I made a post asking for a clear explanation...I think its a complicated term.

Haha, did you get a clear answer?
Was discussing this with someone the other day. When exactly does a turn on become a fetish?
They thought it may possibly be when you need that thing in order to get off but I disagree

It is to do with something that is a part of or connected to the main thing e.g. Having a fetish for women's feet, or a man's hands, or shoes.

I didn't get a detailed enough answer, about 2 people responded to that post and I took It down.

Something that isn't sexual in itself. Like you couldnt have a fetish for boobs or dicks coz thats just normal. The fetish is when a non sexual thing becomes sexual.

            This.

And is there an element of the fetish being the *only* thing that gets the person aroused, or is that something different? I forget.

Edit: Oh duh...derp already said that in a different way. I'm a tard today.

If it were the only thing it would be weird maybe pathological. We all have fetishes, they're normal. I think.

And you can't get off without whatever it is, it has to be a bit more than just liking or enjoying something, to be a fetish it must essential for that person to get off sexually

      • Ellenna

If it's something that's not sexual in itself, but you can't get off without it, that's a fetish: for example, leather or high heels or just about anything
