Is it normal i listen to novels on tts instead of reading them?

At night I feel exhausted and my eyes hurt when I try to read. I love reading novels and recently I started listening to them on tts instead of reading them. A friend of mine and also a reading enthusiast feels mad at me and have told me that it is disrespectful to the authors.
Is it normal to listen to novels on tts?

They wouldn't make audio books if people weren't supposed to listen to them

I've done that in the past. It's sort of nice having a story read to you... even if it's in a weird robotic voice. I suppose TTS has improved since then, I was using the one included in... must have been Windows 98, and it made some weird mistakes, such as pronouncing "pointed" as "poo-aunt"... like it was French or something, plus less surprising things like confusing homographs and mangling proper names.

Reading is getting to be a ting of the past. I like reading so I get more info from it than I do listening.
I've read LOUIS L'AMOUR western books and listened to the same book and it left out a lot of the main caricature's thought's.
