Is it normal i sniff my dogs ass to say hello?

Everyday, I witness my dog sniffing other dogs asses so I figured I should do the same to say hi. So when I come home I get on all 4s and crawl to him. I sniff his butthole and say in a calm, deep voice "HERE KITTY KITTY". He normally looks at me, deeply disturbed. It has greatly improved the dog and my relationship I think. My wife thinks its weird tho.

This normal? I'm sure many pet owners do this but don't want to talk about it. This is also a great way to tell if he needs to go outside to poop.
