Is it normal i think i might not like dogs anymore?

Growing up I had a yellow lab who was my best friend in the whole wide world. We sadly had to put him down when he was 9, but I was excited to get a golden retriever last year, and my GOD did he turn out to be a hassle!

But sometimes I like to search things online to see if anyone else has similar feelings or is going through anything similar, and I eventually found some anti dog YouTube channels and they’ve left me so morally confused. They make such good points about how dangerous dogs really are, but I loved my first one SOOOOOO much that I just can’t bring myself to say I hate dogs, but now I think I understand those who do a bit more.

I feel like my favorite thing in the world has been ruined for me and I don’t know what to do.

Maybe without even realising it you were expecting this new dog to replace the old one, and the relationship that you had, and then you felt empty and disappointed when that didn't happen.

I think pretty much everyone on here understand I like animals a little bit more than the average Joe so this may be surprising to some.

Owning animals sucks. Its another expense that doesn't contribute anything can go wrong at any time. You need to walk them feed them pick up their shit etc. Having one around attracts more bugs brings in more filth it just sucks all around.

But then you get their personality wich is overall a coin toss weither you compliment each other.

But animsls are also wonderful creatures. They are intelligent, thoughtful well some. Who can make coming home go from bleh whatever to omg I can't wait to get home. I mean animals are adorable no denying this. Even rats are cute as hell.

They can give purpose to your life and be their for you always. Having one in your life isn't for everyone and if you arnt ready for it then don't. You got to be willing to commit the next 10 plus of your ears and finances. Something I cant do right now.

Having a pet is a hassle but a worthy one

In short, animals can be fun but not worth it to deal with responsibility.

A lot of people get pets but soon get bored of them anyways.

Kinda yea, they are a serious commitment one i can't do right now. Im to focused on myself to include a life into my list of responsibilities. It wouldn't be right. When I retire I probably will have a few pets. I'll be able to give them all the time in the world then.

It really is tragic. People think getting a pet or a child will fix them when it only distracts them. Living creatures armt toys. To many forget this

Dogs are like people really -
Some dangerous, some docile. Some quiet, others obnoxious.

For the danger part - the main things that affect that are the dog's ability to do harm and also the likelihood. My dog who I recently had to put down was just big enough that he could be dangerous but he was never aggressive nor threatening. Very similar looking to this guy -

Retrievers and labs, because of their size, could definitely pose a threat but neither is really known to be a bad guy, unlike pit bulls or mastiffs.

The anti-dog youtube videos - oh yeah they show the dark side of dogs but that is worst case scenario. I doubt your golden retriever is going to hurt anyone.

You don’t have to love or hate dogs as a whole, you can take it case by case like I do.

Some are sweet rays of sunshine others look like more grief than they’re worth. Some breeds are objectively better than others (more people-friendly and less hassle), with labradors being amongst the best which would explain why you and your yellow lab were such a good match.

    • Thanks, that’s a good way of explaining it. Although people love golden retrievers and my current one is a beast (sometimes he’s fun but sometimes he’s annoying)

There are exceptions, an aunt of mine used to have a big white lab who was completely bonkers, untrainable and full of energy. They lived in the countryside and my two memories of him are him wrestling my dad in a rainy field of mud and my aunt yelling at him for drinking her horse’s urine and eating his faeces.

Same dude, I don't hate dogs, but they can be a major hassle and personally would consider them the worst pets. "ohh but they will love you no matter what!" uhh, yikes? Im not into ass kissers of any species. And dog-obsessed freaks are just as bad or worse than "crazy cat ladies" in my experience - they tend to be narcissistic drama queens with no self awareness, which makes the whole 'dog culture' thing 10x more disgusting.

That has nothing to do with dogs. Most "animal lovers" are hypocrites who only like animals they find appealing. And it's silly saying they're the worst pets when cats and dogs are probably better pets than 99% of wild animals out there. And it seems kind of gross to me when people only like pets as long as they're "easy" to look after.

I'm saying they're the worst out of all the animals traditionally considered as pets. And growing up my family had most kinds of pets, except amphibians and reptiles (both of which are infinitely cooler than dogs anyway so no contest there).

Who said I only like pets that are easy to take care of? I actually hate having any pets at all - I find it completely pointless and depressing. I will take care of others' pets for a limited amount of time sure, but having my own? nah. It's more gross to use an animal to make yourself happy.

You’re right to not like them. They leave shit, hair and vomit everywhere and are just generally disgusting creatures. People only like them because they like the idea of having complete control over another living thing or they think it loves them when really it just likes that they give it treats.

Jesus, sounds like the dog you had this experience with really needed to go to the vet. It's not normal for them to be shitting and vomiting everywhere

True of many pets, the owners can’t tell (or chose to ignore) that their animal is only affectionate out of “cupboard love”.

You are correct in this instance. But, you are a terrible troll otherwise, so the -4 is fitting, and hilarious.

You do realize, of course that all dogs are different? Different dog breeds have different temperaments, and each individual dog has it's own unique personality! The same can also be said of domestic cats.

I think you should get yourself a breed specific book on Golden Retrievers, and also get some books on canine behavior, and dog training. Stop watching those BULLSHIT dog hating YouTube channels, and watch César Millán videos, and if you have a cat watch you some Jackson Galaxy videos! Your brain is like a computer, so if you put garbage in it then garbage is what will come out of it.

As a pet owner it's your responsibility to love, and care for your pet! Love is not just a feeling, but it is also an action; love is an action that you sometimes have to conscientiously choose. Your new puppy isn't going to automatically be perfect, and he will never be the same as your old dog that had to be put to sleep.

If I were on a sinking ship, and I had the last lifeboat I would most certainly rather share it with dogs than people who hate dogs! Hell, I'd rather share my lifeboat with the ship's rats than people, or even one person who didn't like dogs... and don't get me started on people who don't like cats!

In what way are dogs dangerous? Because they have attacked humans sometimes? Most other predatory animals are more dangerous. Including humans for that matter.

Exactly, also dogs attack humans only if humans made them feel they're in danger. Dogs can't be evil, humans can.
