Is it normal i think showers are self cleaning?

I don't clean my shower and bathtub . Since it has soap and water running over it every day I figure it kind of cleans itself . My mom says this is nasty. Washing machines are self cleaning am I right? Why not showers?

    Washing machines get build up. Showers and baths get build up. They don't need to be cleaned as often as cleaning companies would like you to believe, but that's marketing. Realising they get dirty, too, is common fuckin' sense. You can SEE when they need it.
