Is it normal i think we need to make an official chart for acceptable terms?

I think we need to have a vote and make a chart of acceptable terms. It is really starting to irritate me that there is terms most people are ok with but some will get angry about. I mean I do not want to offend anyone but there is terms to identify EVERYONE. So its not evil or sicking to have a term. If 90% of that group says "this is the correct term" and 10% flip the lid when you use that term how can they be angry when the majority agreed to this terminology?

This already happens. It's called 'currently accepted vernacular'. If ever you wonder, "What should I call gays/Jews/Arabs/(insert demographic here)?" just Google the word and the term 'currently accepted vernacular'.
I have gay friends who don't care about the word "fag", so clearly some people are more relaxed than others about which terms are acceptable and which ones aren't, but if you go with the CAV until you know the individual person's preferences you won't offend.
On the other hand, if we have too many rules it actually makes it easier to be offensive, because with a ton of rules flying around it's harder to keep track and easier to break them. And offend someone. Ironically.

Disagree. We shouldn't allow ourselves to build boxes, or walls around certain things.

You start building walls and boxes around some things, you'll find yourself start doing this to A LOT of things.

Nope, freedom of expression is more important than not offending people!

Well, okay, if there are things about the world that are really starting to irritate YOU then EVERYONE should do whatever you demand of them. NOW!

These things emerge organically with time. Language has to be allowed to evolve. Making a list of *inappropriate* terms would be easier, but even then the list is bound to change a little. Just because a list doesn't change, doesn't mean society won't change.

"Nigger" was an acceptable word for any black person so long ago, and it was acceptable for anyone to use it. Writing down on a piece of paper that it's acceptable wouldn't have stopped society from changing it's perception of that word.

    • The N word was always a derogatory word. The terms homosexual and gay are now derogatory even though Homosexual is the ACTUAL term for it. Heterosexual is a term for people who like the other gender. Is that too prejudice?

It means Homo(Same) Sexual(Sexuality) You cant use the term black/coloured/African American since its considered racist or inaccurate. However if a cop asks you for information on the suspect they are going to ask what race/colour they were, how tall they were, what gender they were.

Since not everyone agrees to what we call people I think we should officially have a ruling for what is acceptable. That way people do not have to deal with being told you are being racist/prejudice for using the incorrect term.

"Nigger" wasn't always considered derogatory. It was considered a neutral description of a person, the same way that "black" is now. "Homosexual" and "gay" are not derogatory words where I am from. Neither is the word "black". Those words are considered as neutral descriptions. Unless you live in a very different culture to mine I think you've found some people who are far more sensitive than the norm if they object to the word "black".

The thing is that having an official list won't stop anyone being offended by anything. All it will do is make people feel more self-righteous because they've got a piece of paper to point to that does their ethical thinking for them.

        • Having an official list gives you means to defend yourself when they say you used the incorrect term and try to get you for hate speech. So it means they are wrong and you are right and they can no longer attempt to slander your name.

If its official nothing beats it. The official rules will always beat opinion since opinion really does not matter and the laws do.

It does not matter how immoral an action is or is not if law says otherwise. So if someone thinks something is immoral and a reason to harass you even if it truly is not they cant if the law says they cant.

Exactly what I mean when I say it would make people more self-righteous. In reality having a list doesn't make anyone wrong or right, because absolutely everyone has the right to be offended by absolutely anything, and they have a right to tell you how they feel.

I think you're more over-sensitive than them if you believe it's "slanderous" or if you want the government to give you a nice little list of words so you can feel better about yourself.

            • It is slanderous to make a scene over this type of nonsense. Than complain its a rude term and get you in trouble for it. Since they are deeply offended by it even if its the text book term for it. Even if no one else is offended they will have you for it. How is that not slanderous?
