I dunno if I'm just paranoid about infection or what, but I practically always wash my hands thoroughly with soap and water before inserting a tampon. Sometimes I feel weird in public bathrooms because I'll wash my hands then walk into a stall...I don't see other women doing this.

yep. this is a good idea. others are too lazy i guess... lol I think if you read the instructions in the tampon box it'll say to do this.
Most people's hands are the most unclean, bacteria carrying part of their body, so yes, wash your hands before and after.

It is extremely dangerous to wash your hands before going anywhere near your vagina. Did you know that if you get soap on your clitoris, it could fall off in a sudden bout of leprosy? "No" I hear you say - well, thank me, Kim Jong-Un for saving your clitoris!
That's what they tell you to do in the directions, it's not a high risk but it is good practice.
I have no idea if it's normal, but it seems a good practice to me. At the very least; why not?
