Is it normal its impossible to get an office job?

Everyone and everything gives this impression that when you grow up you can get an office job. In this job you have a lot of room to move up and if you work long enough you will be making 20 dollars an hour. Like what my mom did. However it seems impossible to find an opening for these OFFICE jobs. I really confused as to why we ever got this impression to begin with. Getting an office job is pretty impossible, why do people expect everyone to get one?

The jobs that always hire are labor jobs and its impossible to keep one. Which is why they are always hiring. I would love a job in an office with a tie and a suit but I know that this is really impossible to ask for. Why does society think this idea is achievable?

What? An office job can be anything from a file clerk to a city engineer or beyond. Do you think everyone who works in an office does the same job?

A college education is a must, any decent one.

I agree. They used to have secreterial schools a few decades ago but these days its easier if you have taken a few college courses, but some will train on the job. I often see ads for dental assistant that say " no experience necessary". Or maybe check with a temp agency. I'd love an office job service sucks.

I imagine any office job has some basic minimum educational requirements. If you don't have them and probably some experience gained through summer interning, of course you will find these jobs impossible to get.
If all you want is $20.00 an hour though, that's probably entry level for garbage men and the like. As you said, you can get labor jobs pretty easily, but why you can't keep them might be something you should figure out. If you can't keep a job as a simple laborer, you sure as hell won't be able to stick it out in the cutthroat office environment.

    • Yeah that is a misconception. Particular jobs like garbage man and stuff like working on an oil rig you need to have someone to get you in generally. Its not as simple as applying and suddenly getting the job. Also labour jobs right now are only doing temp to hire and they often do not keep you even if you are a great worker. I was the third best worker in my company for the summer temp job and they did not keep me. The world is not as simple as you are making it out to be. Temp to hire have a habit of firing most people and a lot of those people are hopping from temp to temp job. They are not automatically hired on permanently like you seem to believe. Here is a sad reality even if you are a good worker you can still get laid off and the reason for a lay off is that they needed less workers. It does not mean you were bad at your job. I was laid off and I was not a terrible worker. Government and office jobs also have lower turn over rates, stuff like labor has high turn over meaning they fire a lot.

I've been in the workforce since I was 12 years old. I don't need a lecture on getting and keeping a job from some snot nosed kid who can't get and keep a job, thanks. Last time I wanted a job, I got one of only 3 in my field, in the whole country.
Being 'the third best worker in my company' isn't shit if you can't make yourself indispensable to your employer.

        • They do not hire 12 year olds after the 90s. The rule is you have to be 16 and maybe 15 if your family owns a business. You really cant expect people to work from the age 12 if they were born after the 16 rule came to pass. You need to understand the world does not stay still because you want it to. You need to get with reality. This is not the 50s. Also labour jobs hire and fire so much since its a simple job where you can easily train more people. Even if you are a great worker, it does not mean you are automatically indespensible. Since its so easy to train and hire more people for the same simple crap.

Think about it this way. We have people who can flip a burger but that is a simple skill. Now if you hire someone like that you pay them very little. The reason being they do not have a lot of specialized skills or are trained in skills you can easily find somewhere else, or train in someone else. Meaning its very easy to fire these people since its not hard to get and train a new fry cook. What you seem to assume is its hard to train someone in labor work but honestly its really not. If your wage is low enough that means your life is worthless to a company. No matter how good a worker you are. They can hire more.
