Is it normal math classes are ridiculous these days?

My son is in 4 th grade and the math they give them is what I did in 8 th grade! Seriously the teacher even told parents its not expected most kids will succeed because the math levels are way too advanced. It's something called Common Core. I think it's setting a child up for failure( to be given math which is way above their age level). Have any other parents come across this?

Unfortunately, the American Day Care System has very few teachers left who can actually teach, so it isn't at all surprising that the day care workers who masquerade as teachers would say something like that.
If you were educated before the 'new math' days then you know how math should be taught. If not, perhaps there is help on the internet.
I wish you good luck though, as I spent a number of years with college students who couldn't subtract 23 from 301 (for instance) in their heads when playing darts. It was so sad to see them having to pull out their phones to do simple math. College students who couldn't add or subtract simple numbers in their heads!

It's Common Core, definitely. I've heard a lot of complaints about it, nobody likes it.

Yes, I agree with you. I also felt unchallenged and didn't feel like I was learning and the private/Home schooled kids that came to public school were way ahead of us. I am going to tell you if you live in America take your child out of school and put them in K1-12. Its a free home schooling program that they recently implemented. Its like online schooling but they will be better off. Just make sure that your kid does a sport or something as well.

Not only are the expectations totally outrageous, but the way they teach the mechanics doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Some of the methods I've seen for teaching addition and subtraction have been absolutely backwards.

Private tutoring will take care of the problem.
