Is it normal my coworker was so lazy?

We work in a retail job. Everyday this new dude acts so negative and sucks happy conversations away. He always complains about having to talk to people and how heavy the pallets of merchandise are. He also whines about how a 12 dollar an hour job shouldn't be hard and how ugly people are. He also takes twice as long on his breaks. I got tired of him and told him something along the lines of "Bitch! My 114 pound ass drags twice as much as you, and gets it done in half the time you take and you're twice my weight! If you don't want to work, then get out!" He did leave. I'm pretty sure he's not coming back. Is it normal? It's not the first time we had someone like this.
