Is it normal my dad won't let me because i'm a girl?

I really want to learn how to fish. I want to have that skill and be able to catch my own food. My dad is teaching my brother to fish right now but he won't teach me. He says it's because fishing is only for fathers and sons. No, my family is not religious, we're atheists, and we live in Washington State USA. Normally my dad tells me I can be anything I want to be. Is it normal that he thinks fishing is only for males?

That's bullshit. Go out there and fish!

Perhaps his only intent is to have a "Father and son" bonding experience. No matter the reason it's not fair to you if you would like to learn how to fish. A Father should be happy and proud to pass on his skills to his children. I find this abnormal, actually.

Have you asked him to take you without your brother? Or maybe you can express how much you'd like to learn to your brother. If the two of you ask together he might change his mind and teach you, too.

If he still won't let you go, shave off all your hair, grab a rod and tell your Dad (call him by his real name) "Today I'm going with you no matter what YOU say!" Ha, I'm only joking, so don't to that. I'd hate to be the reason why you get in trouble if he were to react badly to you doing something like that. I really hope he does change his mind about this, though (if he doesn't then maybe your brother will teach you). Good luck!

      Agree!

    • It's not a father son bonding thing. He thinks there are things girls should do, like cooking and making a home, and things that only boys should do, like fishing and fixing cars. I have asked him to take me separate from my brother and he refuses. He says the fish in the lake are not for me, they are only for the men.

I by far disagree with your father. My question is does your grandfather (your dads, dad) think the same thing?

Anyone can fish. I use to go fishing quite a bit when I was little and I'm a woman.

Your Father is ~dead~ wrong! Of course you're already aware of this, and that's great because that means you're not being brainwashed into believing his way of thinking is right. I hope he doesn't pass his ignorance onto your brother. Sorry, but it seems that the only way you'll learn is if you find out how to on your own or with the help of teacher or Google. (if you brother won't teach you, that is).

I agree with you on this one. I think she needs to ask her brother if he believes that it's only men who can fish. I would hope the answer would be "no". Then of course find someone who will teach you to fish because it is quite relaxing.

What I really hope is that her Dad comes to his senses.

I think your dad is dead wrong. My last wife was crew on our sport fishing boat. There are still IGFA records available for women, for both salt and fresh water, unlike men's records. Find a guy who'll teach you and bring home some nice fish and show daddy the error of his ways.

    • It's not common then is it, for women? You still think I need a man to teach me because it's not normal for women?

I don't care who you get to teach you, I was just saying that one does not need to be a guy to fish.

I'm a 28 yr old guy and an avid outdoorsman. I would love to have a daughter with an interest in fishing. I can't say why he has chosen not to teach you because you're a girl. Some men just feel there are some things a girl shouldn't do. Perhaps, if you are attractive maybe he is afraid that you knowing how to fish will only bring more attention from the guys. :)

Call him on it....Your dad is insecure. He's way insecure about something. Tell him you don't even have to go with him and your brother if need be...but that he's always taught you to be your own person and that you can do ANYTHING you believe in.

Tell him you want to learn how....and you want to do it from your father and not from a friend or someone you're dating. That should change his tune.

You know, I always questioned whether I wanted to be a farmer, I mean of course I did its in my blood. its a man's job, I was bullied for liking farming.
Then one day I thought what the fuck, this is my life. I'll show them fuckers.

A bit different but, if you want to fish, you go learn how to fish :) Bet you'd even be better than your brother and dad! GIRL POWER.

Just go fish and prove it that girls can do the same! Has he seen that episode of Full House?

I don't think any humans have watched any episodes of Full House in the last decade.

My cousin watches Nickelodeon, and it still shows it on there. Starts at 8, I think...

It was just some random reference, anyway.

  • He seems like a bit of a douche. I get the whole "Father son" bonding process, but that does not mean you and him shouldn't go through that same process as "Father and daughter".

        • Um all dads are like that here where I grew up. Dads in the big city could have different minds about it. That's why I asked. It's normal here but what about all over the US. What state are you from?

I live in the US and I don't know any dads here that says that to his daughter. Plus, I use to live out in the country in the state I live in.

aw, i'm sorry your dad is being so sexist towards you. i know it's probably a long wait but, when you're older, you can go fish as much as you want! you could also call him out on being sexist, but i don't suggest doing that if it'll put your safety in any sort of danger. i hope things get better for you, friend!

Does your mum support you in this or do you have two 1950's era parents, in which case I guess you can only hope to grow up soon and get away from them into the real world, where most people would agree that no-one shd be stopped from doing anything because of their gender.

    Good luck to you

Find someone that will teach you! Would your mother be willing to do it? Or, is there someone else that you know that wouldn't mind teaching you?

My father is an immigrant, whom is a very traditional person, yet I've never so much as heard any degrading sexist remarks from him. I think your pops is just a special case.

    Best of luck.

Buy some fishing equipment one day and go watch YouTube videos for tips on fishing.

    • I would if I had the money. My job only pays minimum wage and I live paycheck to paycheck so I can't afford it. My dad has a bunch of rods and equipment, that's why I was hoping he would teach me and let me borrow some gear.

i think that maybe hes teaching your brother as a father-son male bonding thing but thats really unfair of him... you should have your brother teach you and not invite your dad

Just say you want to go with him sometime..what's the problem? Either that show up at the lake next time with a bucket, some bait and a fishing rod and see what happens.

      • That's fucked up. There's no reason for girls not to fish. Your dad sounds like some kind of sexist terrorist. There's lots of good places to fish in Washington you can find. I live on Lake Tapps but the fish here suck.
