Is it normal my mom uses my inhaler?

A few months ago I was given a prescription for an inhaler due to my mild asthma which only becomes problematic with exercise. Since I don't get much exercise, I don't use it much. My chainsmoking mother (who could easily get her own inhaler) decides to start using it. She uses it multiple times a day and keeps it in her purse and when I question her about it she gets really pissy and defensive, claiming I don't have asthma, she needs it more, she has asthma attacks multiple times a day (which no one has ever seen), no one cares about her, etc. Basically she makes it all about herself as usual. My dad and brother think it's ridiculous that she uses my inhaler when she could just get her own but she won't even take the responsibility to go to her own doctor's appointments.

Tale it from her, and hide it.

I don't know how it works where you live, but I wasn't able to get a prescription for my asthma just by asking our doc for one; I was examined and tested before the diagnosis was made. I assume you were too, so your mother saying that you don't have asthma seems pretty stupid.

Obviously, the sensible thing for her to do would be to see a doctor and get her own inhaler. Maybe she's just being a self-centred pain in the butt, but I wonder if she's afraid to go to the doctor because she's worried he might tell her she has a problem much more serious than asthma.

    • Yeah that's one of the reasons she won't go...

  • What the hell? That's pathetic behaviour from your own mother. Tell her to get her own inhaler. You need yours because you have a chronic condition, not because you're a selfish, disgusting, chain-smoking boob.

She's stupid and selfish and self-centred. If she needs an inhaler she should go to the doctor and get a script for one rather than take yours. I suggest you go back to your doctor and say you've lost your inhaler and can you please have another script. When you get your replacement inhaler, hide it where she can't get at it.

If she's a smoker who needs to use an inhaler several times a day and she's a smoker, she has a medical problem she should see a doctor about, but that's not your problem, it's hers. She may have emphysema (I do, from years of smoking before I quit) and there's no cure of that, but it can be managed if she uses her brains and sees her own doctor about it.
