Is it normal my roommate behaves like that?

I have a roommate who makes stupid comments about me and a colleague of mine all the time.
For example, when I have no more space on my board and therefore chop vegetables in small steps, so that I can use my array, because I wouldn't be able to use a two-dimensional array.
Or if I offer my help, he doesn't react and I go into my room shrugging my shoulders, then it is directly assumed that I do all other work without even knowing if I am needed or not. If I don't do that then, in his opinion I am lazy and too stupid for it.
Basically he always tells a lot of positive things about himself and only negative things about others. He always emphasizes "he does not want to place himself above others".
I slowly get the impression that this is exactly what he wants. Only, understanding why he does that, I don't. From my current knowledge, I would assume that he is not satisfied with his current situation. Because the only real testable achievements lie in his past. In recent years, he has repeatedly forgotten knowledge that he has repeatedly added, has dropped out of his studies and has gained weight. Idk if that's any help.
