Is it normal or a mid-life crisis?

I was talking with a group of people from work about the so called mid-life crisis and opinions differed. Around the time I turned 50, I bought a convertible sports car, a boat, a motorcycle, was considering a major career change, and started doing riskier outdoor activities (skydiving, survival backpacking, etc.)

My view was that by that time my kids were on their own, I was single, finally had the extra money and time, and was simply doing the things I had always wanted to do. And that I would have done these things earlier in life had I not had the family responsibilities and time/money constraints. But many of the other people thought it was a classic mid-life crisis.

What do you think? Is what I started doing normal, or not normal and a sign I was having a crisis?

I think a mid life crisis is a metaphorical kicking of the tires. Checking on old habits and patterns and not just testing new ones, but changing them.

You may want to look at what your friends are saying. Try to see it from their perspective. Change is okay and we all react a little differently to life changes. The twrm has a negative stigma to it, but it is just part of a bigg r cycle.

You went through a similar one in your late twenties. The metaphorical kicking of the tires. Every 28 years or so we, as people, becone introspective on what we are doing with our life. This isnt a true midlife crisis to me, just reality. A true crisis is when the 40 year old wakes up and realizes they didnt learn the lessons of their youth and are grasping at straws to be that kid again. That doesn't sound like what you are doing.

I hope that wasn't too rambly.

Sounds normal to me if you have the freedom, money and time to do those things.

Are you on the verge of a mental breakdown as well? That's what usually comes to mind when I hear 'mid life crisis.'

    • Fortunately, no. I'm happier and more relaxed than ever.

Then I don't consider you to be having a 'mid life crisis' then. Carry on :)

"a shitty little pop up camper", NEVER! Your 'land yacht', for sure!
When I'm too old to sail, we'll see you on the highways and byways, sliding along in our "Toy Truck", breaker, breaker.

Roger that! My truck basically is a land yacht. It's 18 feet long so I can pull my pop up dinghy behind me. Maybe I'll even build a crows nest on the roof.

        Honk, honk, low bridge ahead.
We'll not have an "RV" of the production sort, either.
I figure a decent size cab-over with davits on the back for our little boat (not this boat) and solar panels covering the roof.

If you can afford it, sure why not. As for me, I just want a shitty little pop up camper and then I'm hittin the road with my trusty canine companions. I figure I'm at mid life right now so I guess I better get goin.
