Is it normal smartphone footage annoys me so much?

You see smartphone footage on tv or websites, and it usually has 3 panels. The main screen and then 2 blurry versions bordering the main image. Why tho? The blurry side bits are so off-putting. It just looks wrong and my brain can't reconcile what those blurry side panels are hiding from me.
It's so annoying! Just show the main shot, like a normal camera.

Amirite in thinking this is stupid and annoying?!? I am, aren't I?

    Phones shouldn't be allowed to record in vertical mode. Only horizontal mode. You wouldn't take a real camera and turn it vertical to shoot video, so why would you with a phone?

    Ugh I hate when people keep their phone vertically when shooting film. I think the blurred sides is TV channel's way to make the vertical letterbox a bit less contrasting.

    It's because most phone users haven't the intelligence to turn the phone sideways to landscape format when video filming.
