Is it normal that balloons are my personal hell?

My whole life, I cannot STAND balloons. Whether it be at a birthday party as a child or a High School Graduation, balloons are my absolute nightmare. I genuinely can't explain why; maybe it's the fear of them popping (since I do not fair well with loud sudden noises), but it's something about balloons that seem so goddamn menacing. As a kindergartener, kids would chase me around with balloons because they knew I'd basically panic until I cried. I hate the sounds they make, latex or plastic or whatever, I hate the sound they make when they pop or deflate, and seeing giant boquets of balloons is like looking into hell for me. I've never had a particulary "bad" or "scarring" experience with them, so I guess it's just super irrational.

Am I insane for this?

Now I'm imagining you in a hot air balloon.

It's just one of the many quirks you have. There's nothing wrong with having a weird phobia.

Nope, you're not insane. When my daughter was like 4 or 5, I was blowing up balloons for her birthday party. She liked watching me blow them up, so I thought I'd blow one up and let it go before tying it off, making that pttpttpttpttptt noise as it flew away. All kids like that right? Not her! It terrified her and she was afraid of balloons being blown up for a few years after that. I felt horrible. :-/

For you, balloons; for me, clowns.

    Now, a clown with balloons...
