Is it normal that cowards use gossip as a means of winning arguments?

When you disagree with someone, discussing your disagreement with them seems to be a more honest and moral way to better understand where each other stand. Talking to people who already agree with your opinion and trying to convince them that the first person is "bad" is a very immature, but disturbingly popular means of interacting with the world.

Nobody comes off any wiser, and everyone is worse off.

Yeah, I can see your point, but often times the gossiping person is just looking to be validated as he or she might in fact be very insecure about his or her place in the world. Sometimes what looks like gossip is one person confiding in another, although there can be a fine line between confidence and gossip. I would try to not be too black and white in your thinking about this one.

Finally, and this literally just popped in my head, if they're focusing on what the other person is or what they think of the other person I would think it could be gossip, but not so much if they're talking about their feelings regarding this person and how that person makes them feel. I hope that helps.

  • People are gonna hate me for saying this, but I've seen that happen on here quite a few times.

I have too. For example, there is a lot of gossip that Crûsades sucks cock. That doesn't mean it's true.

    I could not agree more.

If you are looking for an explanation why people do that, I have a theory:
Discussing controversial topics and arguing costs much more cerebral energy than conversing with people one agrees with.

Of course, avoiding an argument is not exactly honorable in most cases.

It's normal. Have you seen the way people in the media represent others? I don't know if you're American or not, but when election year gets here and the candidates are all lined up, see how much of the media and its viewers actually describes the viewpoints of the candidates in a fair and objective manner. I guarantee you, there will be plenty of "S/he stole lunch money in the third grade! Can you trust them with your taxes? Sponsored by..."
