Ebola and Zika weren't "new" diseases that had already been out and running rampant in some countries. People only started thinking it was new because the media usually never spoke about them until it was in America. So these "new" diseases for us is known diseases for some.

and the reason why it's in the news now is because people are bringing it with them to America. You know how our society is where we think "well its not happening here so it obviously isn't a big deal"

Generally the media does this when they want to avert the publics attention from something important or suspicious that the government doesn't want to much attention drawn to it, thus the media then blast the TV with some stupid virus or disease that's been around for years (an example would be Ebola) and make a big deal about it, claiming it's going to spread around the world, the virus adapting new mutations or strains, etc.

The government averts attention away from the subject they wish, while the media pump fear mongering propaganda on social networks. Of course that isn't always the case, sometimes they just do it for shits and giggles to decrease the population.
