Is it normal that i bring a calculator when going to a shop?

When I go to a shop, I usually go to a shop with my money and calculator the reason why I do it is because I want to work out how much I'm buying and the percentage of money being spent. Even though I still hate maths I make it a habit even though people stare at me in the shops while using a calculator.

Also I use it when finding out how much I can buy a product when I'm on a budget and also seeing if I'm exceeding the budget.

Is this habit normal?

I do this but with the calculator on my phone, people probably just think I'm looking at a digital shopping list which I do so also, I find my phone very handy when I go shopping

I was tempted to call you a nerd because nerds like calculators. On the other hand nerds are good at math and dont need the calculator so I think you might actually not be a nerd.

I'm a smartarse, I do it my head, often had rows at the checkout in the old days when they used to type the price in. In one shop I had to use (only supermarket in town) the only girl on Saturday afternoons was wrong every week. Just before I left the country she threw all of her toys out the pram and stormed off, I was only trying to tell her she had given me £5 too much change!

Sounds like a good idea, OP. I use the calculator on my cellphone.

I just said the same thing, cells probably look less weird than a whole calculator tbh

If you're on a budget, it's perfectly sensible.

I'm very fortunate in that it has been a long time since money was that tight for me, but I went through a phase of consciously looking at prices and then, once I'd finished, guessing what the total would be. Surprisingly often, the guess was pretty close to the final bill, so somehow my brain was adding things up without me deliberately trying to do that.

I think it's sorta like how, if you spend a couple of weeks stopping to guess the time at random points and then checking what the time really is, your estimates can become pretty accurate. Our brains are capable of doing surprising things at a subconscious level.

I make it a hobby to mentally calculate the marginal return on the investment of additional cost to the marginal reduction in price on quantity purchases. There is almost always an optimal solution depending on how quickly you use the product.

Sounds complicated but it's what millionaires do when they go shopping. In itself, the mental exercise is truly enjoyable.

Totally normal. I can run the base total in my head so I'm usually within a dollar or so for the final checkout; but I do access the calculator feature on my phone from time to time to figure how many cans or packages of something I can afford.

My rule is that I only spend the amount of cash in my pocket unless it's an emergency, internet purchase, gas for the car, a major preplanned purchase on credit, etc.

    Sounds sensible, ignore the snoopers.
