Is it normal that i can't stand ebonics?

Ebonics drive me right up the wall. I can't understand half of it; it's like a foreign language. I know this is supposed to be some kind of cultural difference, but why would anyone want to sound uneducated? And the words themselves that are used for certain meanings! Men calling themselves players, because it should be a man's goal to sleep with as many women as possible and commit to none of them. Pimpin - who the hell wants to be a pimp? And "talking" to indicate a relationship. If you can't even call it a relationship, just give it up now.

  • You start to get used to it living in the South. If you think ebonics is hard to understand just try and hold a conversation with a cajun.

You'd like your ignorance to be excused but not theirs?

ignorant how? I think its only common sense to speak correctly so people can understand you. That's pretty much how human society evolved, based on language. If people want to talk like a "bad ass mofo" don't expect the rest of us to know what the hell they are talking about.

The "playa" and the pimp stuff is due to Thug Culture, if I am not mistaken.

I don't like Ebonics. It's hard to understand and hearing makes me uncomfortable because, of the barrier of understanding and I don't know how to react to those words.

You can try to laugh, but it doesn't take care of the root problem. There really should be more of an effort to make them want to learn proper English. It's sad.

If you don't like it, don't converse with those people. Simple, get on with your life now. I have solved your problem, you're welcome.

Wanna know what's even worse? When someone does that AND tells you that you are "talking white" because you don't speak like that.

    Talking...white.
    ...
    ...
I that point, I don't know if they're insulting me or telling me that they're incapable of displaying intelligence.

I've been told I sound "white", that I sound like a snob, and that I'm putting on airs.

America has a lot of learning to do. People have to stop defining themselves by race.

You say this as if "white people" slang is not equally idiotic and frustrating.

    "YOLO"

Honestly, it seems a no more intelligent way to communicate than pigeon English.
If someone chooses to sound like an uneducated dolt, be they black, white, green or blue, then they will probably find few paths open which will facilitate their way through life.
When my youngest daughter brought that crap home and attempted to speak it to me, she actually found it facilitated her sitting quite quickly and unintentionally, on her ass, on the floor. Being a quick learner, Ebonics was never spoken in my presence again.

Well I've spoken standard english and "ebonics" for years and switching back and forth is relatively easy. Though things get lost in trying to revert from one to the other.

Ex: "I ain't got no blankets." (Slang version) = "I have no blankets."

"I ain't got no blankets." (Standard) = "I have some blankets."

Those who speak ebonics perpetuate racial stereotyping. Yet they're probably too stupid to see or understand that.

They didn't grow up around it and don't understand that a lot of us "lazy speakers" can switch back and forth between formal and slang. The word "ebonics" sounds so rank and distasteful to me, which is probably why it's their default word to slang.

To me it's tiring to constantly speak formally, but I can do just fine in a proper setting. "I don't have no" in formal speak is still a tough one for me to understand. Can you explain it? As far as slang goes the double negatives cancel out and it means "I have none."

ya, the ebonics and the names black people give their kids are just ridiculous. "Shaqueethla", "Hernavious", "Quatinkio"... poor kids.

I think the biggest problem I have with "ebonics" which is just a fancy name for ghetto speak, is this: when black people were slaves they spoke improper English because their owners didn't want them to learn anything or sound intelligent. they couldn't even learn to read for Gods safe. So why would you want to talk in a way that came from slavery and ignorance and being oppressed? Youd think that if your ancestors were slaves youd want to rise as far above that as you possibly can. I know a few black intellectuals, and when on was accused of 'talking white" she said "Ill be damned if Im going to talk like Mammy the slave".

I'm an inquisitive person, so if someone says something I don't understand, I ask. Then I get looked at like I'm the moron for not understanding. I even asked why ebonics are preferable to plain old English, and was told I just "don't get it". I speak three languages, but I get pitying looks for not understanding this. It drives me nuts.

I cant stand any kind of ridiculous jargon like that. Ebonics should just be called "lazybonics". Its not a real language you know, its just a sad (lack of) cultural phenomenon.
