Is it normal that i can taste music?

Ever since I was young, I've been able to "taste" music. What I mean is like I associate a flavour or taste with different music genres. For example, many happy pop songs with certain sounds can taste sweet like different types of candy, whereas others can taste like more savoury food. Metal music often tastes like chocolate. Violin music tastes like honey a lot of the time, as well as classical music having a honey/yoghurt taste. Some songs with twangy guitar tastes oniony. And 80's music always tastes like tomatoey like bologneise again. Lots of music tastes like crisps/potato chips and like bbq. Reggae music always tastes like Mexican food like spicy salsa. You get the picture.

Strangely enough, I was just reading an interview with a neurologist who has a particular interest in the relationship between our sensory perceptions and how that constructs the reality which we experience. One of the things he said is:

"The most widely cited statistic regarding the prevalence of synaesthesia is that it affects about 4-5% of individuals. What that indicates is that there are people out there with essentially normal brains – these are not individuals with pathology, they’re not people with brain injury or damage – who experience reality in a very different way from most of us. It highlights that our perception of reality is so defined by how our brains work and illustrates that it’s entirely dependent upon our nervous system."

I don't experience it with music as much, but definitely do with certain words, especially those that sound similar to a food item. Carnival reminds me of caramel, for example.

Funny, I was actually thinking of asking a question like this but with words, as I was thinking about how I can nearly "taste" them when I think about them.
