Is it normal that i cannot tolerate doing something that's useless

I cannot tolerate doing something that in my opinion is useless.

By useless I mean, if something is not contributing in any way to the objective that I have currently.

As an example, I am currently studying art. I want to become a digital artist, freelance or contract in a company. specifically the artist that draws concept art for characters. I also love doing complete Illustrations or fanart.

So here I am, paying a fortune to study in this institute. and they're making me make sculptures, visual illusion, making stupid shit with plastic straws etc.

I absolutely cannot stand doing this stuff that does not contribute in any way to my objective.

They do teach stuff that actually have a connection to my objective, but that's just a fraction of it. ( I can find people teaching these online, and oh boy do they teach me better)

Everyone argues that it's for the degree, but fuck, I can't stand it.

I would rather pay to be taught by professional artist in the industry that only teaches skills that I actually need in the industry.

It's cheaper to pay for lessons for digital art. I met 3 people to went to school and couldn't find work for the field they studied and they complained about owning a lot of money for their education.

I felt this way with certain classes in college I decided to just take the classes I needed for my career and not take the rest. Didn't get my degree but I really don't need one for what I do.

To be fair to make digital art you must understand physical art. Some artists use 3D dummys to understanding shadow and shading. So knowing different forms of art is always helpful. As far as having useless classes in your degree that is kind of an issue we have in general with the HS and university set up. I would look into a ACS degree set up as there are degree set ups which are more focused, shorter and give you an internship and lets yiu transfer directly to field you are studying. Also art like this can be done freelance so I would if you could learn what you need and just drop out.

You may not yet understand this... but the best art has always been produced by people who at least know the basics of other art forms and styles.

Many artists have become major trendsetters by incorporating one technique from another form of art into the main one they are working on.

Thus, all introductory art classes start out by teaching about all the major different kinds of art. You can specialize later. Also, you are unlikely to be able to hire the best artist to instruct you in the area you want to develop - if you don't know the basics of the other art forms.

    • I know some other art that helps me, and i like doing them, one of them is sculpting, it helps me understand more about human anatomy and other stuff.

Plastic straws construct? not so much.

If you have the chance please visit the Milwaukee Art Museum... especially the sections on modern art.

You are likely going to be very surprised at what can be used to create art.

Bonus is that the relatively new entrance building is in itself a piece of art and you can spend hours looking at it and watching it's "wings" rise and fall during the day.

Its a very rare modern example where an architect was allowed to completely build their vision on what a building would be; and not start with and idea and then cheapen it along the way because the idea cost more to build than anticipated: Milwaukee just kept coming up with the money to implement every idea and concept despite it costing about twice what the initial guesstimate to build.

The architect has never had another of his buildings finished that way. Everyone else didn't have the budget to finish his concepts... and things were cut out as the building progressed.

Well that’s quite the ridged personality you have, which does not meld well with creativity at all.

If you want the degree you have to follow the curriculum.

    • I never said I wanted the degree. I went there to learn not get a piece of paper. In other subjects a degree may very well be important, but in art?, no.
