Is it normal that i loathe all religious people?

I am a militant atheist, and the thought of any "organized religion" makes me cringe. It doesn't matter how much I like a person, if I find out they are religious, the amount of respect I have for them automatically diminishes to non-existent. I find it to be impossible to take anyone seriously who believes in such garbage, and I honestly perceive people of faith to be complete jokes, and I feel like they aren't worthy of my time or intellect.

I only dislike religious folk if they do 5 things:

    1) Try to indoctrine others into their religion

    2) Encourage large families of 4 or more kids

    3) Tell anyone who's not religious that she or he
will "burn in hell" for not being part of their religion

    4) If they don't accept everyone for who they are.

    and

    5) Don't do good for those around them and be the true people of God and Jesus. If you want someone to respect you, you need to be a good example for everyone else. This can go for the non-religious too.

You're a "militant" atheist, huh? Are you going to set up your own atheist caliphate?

Absolute intolerance like yours is nothing but destructive, it solves nothing, it provides nothing, it changes nothing. It's as bad as a Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Sikh etc. losing all respect for someone because they're irreligious.

I think intelligent, balanced and well-informed individuals are able to keep things in perspective, and will avoid this kind of extreme reaction to something relatively benign.

There's so much in this world that has gone on because of religion that is in no way "benign." It is ignorant to talk about religion as being "benign."

I'm fully aware of the atrocities people have committed in the name of a religion. I'm aware of the ongoing conflicts disagreements about religion create. I'm aware of how it can be utilised to manipulate people into conforming to a standard, or submitting to the will of another. Believe me, I'm not saying anything from a position of ignorance, little archer person.

It's "an extreme reaction to something relatively benign", because losing all respect for someone solely because they have a personal belief in a deity or deities is an ridiculous. It shouldn't negate every other aspect of their personality, every other action and motive in someone's life.

Most religious people we meet aren't suicide bombers in waiting - hence my use of the word 'benign'. Benign like a non-life threatening tumour. It sits there, floating around in someone's head. It might be preferable if it wasn't there, but there's no guaranteed it will metastasise, or ever cause any trouble, simply because it is there.

I like the analogy about the tumour. And I like the epithet and it suits me well, but I am not little, I'm taller than most men! I share a certain militancy with the OP, and wish to shoot down the morons here with my arrows of wisdom. However I pilfered the quote I used for my username, allow me to serenade you...

To be or not to be, that is the question, whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or to take arms against a sea of troubles and by opposing end them. To die, to sleep no more and by a sleep to say we end the heartache and the thousand natural shocks that flesh is heir to. 'Tis a consummation devoutly to be wished. To die, to sleep, to sleep, perchance to dream; ay there's the rub for in that sleep of death, what dreams may come after we have shuffled off this mortal coil, must give us pause.

Well I always appreciate a spot of shakespeare, taller-than-most-men archer person.

Here's some Sylvia Plath in return:

            Pure? What does it mean?
            The tongues of hell
Are dull, dull as the triple
            Tongues of dull, fat Cerberus
Who wheezes at the gate. Incapable
            Of licking clean
The aguey tendon, the sin, the sin.
            The tinder cries.

            The indelible smell
            Of a snuffed candle!
Love, love, the low smokes roll
From me like Isadora’s scarves, I’m in a fright.

One scarf will catch and anchor in the wheel,
            Such yellow sullen smokes
Make their own element. They will not rise,
            But trundle round the globe
Choking the aged and the meek,
The weak Hothouse baby in its crib,
            The ghastly orchid
Hanging its hanging garden in the air.

            Devilish leopard!
            Radiation turned it white
And killed it in an hour.

            Greasing the bodies of adulterers
Like Hiroshima ash and eating in.
            The sin. The sin.

            Darling, all night
I have been flickering, off, on, off, on.
The sheets grow heavy as a lecher’s kiss.

            Three days. Three nights.
            Lemon water, chicken
            Water, water make me retch.

I am too pure for you or anyone.
Your body Hurts me as the world hurts God.

            I am a lantern —
My head a moon of Japanese paper,
            my gold beaten skin
            Infinitely delicate and infinitely expensive.

Does not my heat astound you! And my light!
All by myself I am a huge camellia
Glowing and coming and going, flush on flush.

I think I am going up,
            I think I may rise —
The beads of hot metal fly, and I love, I
            Am a pure acetylene virgin
            Attended by roses,
            By kisses, by cherubim,
By whatever these pink things mean!
            Not you, nor him
            Nor him, nor him
(My selves dissolving, old whore petticoats) —
            To Paradise.

Most of the people you meet are religious or have such beliefs. You shouldn't judge others, we're all in it together in this life and even though my view of life differs with others I still manage to get along with them. Some religious people must think of nonreligious people the same way...

I am agnostic, so I am neutral on God's existence. I think that we cannot know whether God exists in a philosophical sense or not. Since the OP is a militant atheist, hasn't he made a leap of faith that God cannot exist in a philosophical sense? Doesn't this make his militancy obnoxious like evangelism?

PS. No question that religion is for the weak minded masses that have no cognitive skills.

I don't like organized religion either, but the fact that you see anyone of faith as a waste of time just shows how immature you are. One of intellect knows not to judge someone without even knowing them; you analyze their character first. You need to just get off your high horse and get over yourself. You're not any better than anyone else in the world. Besides, atheism is, in itself, an organized religion too. So congratulations; you're a hypocrite, just like those overly religious people.

You sound just as judgmental as religious fundamentalists. I'm agnostic but don't have a problem with religious people as long as they don't indoctrinate me into their religion, tell me I will "burn in hell" or look down on me in other ways.

I would add another feeling to this, that the OP didn't mention: I despise religious people. What kind of person hears of someone who got gangraped and tortured and murdered and says - well the lord works in mysterious ways, there was a reason but we just don't know his big plan yet. Absolute fucktards. And I am sorry reminiscent, but I just cant abide that sort of thinking.

Im not sure why im being apologized to. As I haven't even begun to chip away at what I believe or my core values in this thread.
I stated I am religious because this sort of post has been posted many times before and i stated saying its not right to judge people as a whole merely by what they believe in Is wrong...so i put simply i am religouse...and will probably do so next time this is asked as well.
I really am I just didnt state what religion or how I practice it or the things I believe.

But if you must know I wouldnt say that to a traumatized victim or family members...sounds like im excusing the horrendous actions of the other person. That line should be said for idk accidental happenings of day to day life...dont get down life is life kind of saying but with a religious tone. like if you just had a bad day.
but to be honest I have never once used this saying myself.

I don't know about your beliefs that's true. I like your posts and feel you're a nice person...that's why I apologised. Might not make sense, but that's the reason.

You are just as ignorant as they are, to judge them just because they are religious. I'm an agnostic, but I know plenty of smart religious people even if I don't agree with their views. Don't judge them before you know them.

Why don't you do something about it? There are locusts like yourself all over the internet. Nobody like you says nothing to me in public and I'm almost always wearing a cross.

I would love it if they did though. Lord, I am your arm of justice.

From delusion lead me truth, from dark lead me to light, from death lead me to eternal life.

Just on a side note to those who commented its a pity that through criticism, you can't see the beauty of gods ways. All I mean is that we are coming into an era in which we are more accepting of those who have been oppressed in the past, now we replace it with more oppression for those who believe in god. It seems it doesn't matter the era the victims are still there just that the dynamic has changed. In every church are a few wolf in Sheep clothing you can't judge god by people. Even god said people will let you down.
