Is it normal that i'm slowly growing out of social media?

I'm growing out of Insta, Snap and Facebook solely because I am focusing on my personal life.

My friends keep pestering me to upload stuff even though I don't upload much as I used to but I decline.

My brain is telling me that I'm better of without social media.

Good for you. The shit truly rots people’s brains. I’ve paid close attention to its effect on people since it was invented, and it is not good.

Your brain is right. Social media fries everyone’s brain and rots their mental health whilst tricking them into thinking they’re having fun. It can wreck your life in so many ways.

But then I do somewhat check on it once in a while.

I haven’t deleted my Facebook, I figured the company will keep my data anyway so “deleting” it would achieve nothing. As a result every now and again I’ll get directed by friends to some scandalous post on there but I have a rule of going in for what I came for then going back out. Like resisting buying random stuff in Poundland.

Nothing wrong with checking now and then if people you care about are addicted to it. That's very different to getting sucked into wasting a lot of time and energy there.

I never got into it. It always seemed intrusive to me.

    Yeah, same.
I recently archived the majority of my Instagram posts on my personal Instagram as well as deleted the majority of my followers because I don't really feel comfortable sharing so much stuff. I've come across too many weirdos in life to not think there could be something negative in that. Then I do have 2 Instagram accounts where I share creative stuff. Writing and photography.
And well, Facebook I only share random things on occasionally. I haven't made personal posts there in years. I'm only active in groups and talking to friends in Messenger.

Very normal! I feel the same. I rarely ever post, and pretty much only use it as a way to stay in touch with certain people, for a couple of discussion groups on FB that I find helpful and interesting, and to be able to view FB business pages, ads, etc. I'm not really into the rest anymore.

Good move on your part. Get out and about, join an interest group, etc... Make real friends and enjoy real conversations while you are doing something together...

It makes life far more worthwhile... and exciting.

Social media can be useful and even a positive thing, but it's often a toxic cesspit.

Most of us can be assholes now and then when interacting face to face, but if you remove the possibility of immediate (and possibly physically painful) consequences of behaving like a dick, then the scope for assholery drastically increases. Factor in the desperate need for any attention felt by many and the potential for mob behaviour, and things can get very nasty indeed.

And then, of course, there's the fact that the companies running social media sites deliberately design them to be addictive. We're social animals, and even though we might not be consciously aware of it, we get a little hit of happy-hormones whenever someone responds positively to us. Every time we get a 'Like', that validates our opinions and confirms that our world-view is correct.

The main problem with social media is that it's fundamentally shallow way of interacting with others. There's no room for nuances, and none of the non-verbal cues we rely on when dealing with others in person are available. Another problem is that those who are the 'loudest' always get the most attention, so it promotes the same approach to disagreements used by three-year-old children: "If I shout and bawl loud enough and long enough, I'm gonna get my way!"

I have a Facebook account that I never use, because I'm introverted like that. 🤫

Same here but I haven't used mine in over 6-5 years now.
