Is it normal that i'm the only person at my school that knows how to type?

I mean seriously, everybody at my school always types so lazily. For example, "hey was up wit u?" and it makes me feel kinda nerdy for some reason since I'm pretty much the only one who knows how to type correctly, is it normal?

Just because people type like that doesn't mean they don't know how to type the right way. People have gotten lazy. Hey, I do it sometimes :)

They won't get into college and you will.

It's not laziness. Spelling a certain way is a club for cool kids. Eventually they become adults who spell the same way and come to be seen as stupid by their peers.

  • Trust they know how to type, they're just too lazy to apply effort in sounding professional. You on the other hand have some class and that will get you far in life.

That is what is called Text talk. Its a specific type of shortened slang used most often on the internet and via cell phones. It does not mean they do not know how to type. The ability to type has nothing to do with the way one chooses to write and speak. I myself hate text talk. Especially the fact I cant ever figure out what exactly people are trying to say. I also hate the stupid abbreviations they make up. LOL, BRB, TTYL, LMBO are about the only things I can ever remember.

I hate when people do that! Sometimes wheb they're really pissing me off I'll go into Grammar Nazi mode and refuse to talk about anything but their mistakes until they stop being so lazy and give me reason to believe they're at least making an effort.

I'm the same way. 8th grade, my literature teacher assumed that on the first day EVERYONE talked in text form. But, that's assumption. It benefits me because when i talk to my older sister (she's 19) i feel as though i'm more mature. I guess it's a thing. (:

Well, not necessarily "typing" skills but rather ... grammar skills.

I mean when you say "typing skills" I tend to think of people like myself who can type (rather quickly) without looking at the keyboard.

Still, fear not... Keep up with your proper grammar. It will aid you when you seek employment, or when you're trying to appear professional. Believe me, when your resume is full of proper grammar it will be a shining star when it's being compared with resumes full of "u" and "ur".

Heck, even in online gaming proper grammar will gain you some nice benefits. I still remember back when I played EverQuest... I was trying out a new low-level character and asked someone, "Could I please trouble you for a small heal?" (or something close to that)

All I'd wanted was just enough hit points that I wouldn't fall over dead, but instead of that I was given a full heal because I asked nicely.

So hold on to your grammar skills. They will benefit you.

    =)

I feel EXACTLY the same way that you do. Everyone else types like they have learning difficulties and it's really annoying. For some people, it's so bad that I have no idea what they're saying and it's like I need a translator to figure it out. We're the normal ones, they aren't. Maybe it's acceptable when people substitute words like you as "u" but to substitute the word WITHOUT shortening it for example, "you" to "yuh" or "yue" is just disgraceful and pointless.

This is a pet peeve of mine. If you are texting a friend fine type however you want. But if you are in a public forum, sending some type of correspondence, doing any type of school work do you really want to sound like an idiot? I don't get it.
