Is it normal that i panic every time i hear the doorbell ring?

I haven't been diagnosed with anything, but i always stress a lot and feel shaky when i hear the doorbell. It's such a horrible sound to me. My first thought is always someone who wants to kill or rob me, or the police coming to arrest me. I'd say my mother had a big part in implementing that fear in me, she always yelled at me to never open the door before asking who's there and wait for an answer, and she'd always tell me afterwards about how it could be someone dangerous. But i just wanna know how many other people have this fear too, if so, what do you think implemented that fear in you?

  • Very normal. It could be a murderer or a rapey old man with Ebola.

Anyone ringing my doorbell is not someone I know and can offer no benefit. I never answer a doorbell.

If I have plans you'll text me, not ring my bell.

I don't mind hearing the doorbell ring if I'm expecting someone, or a delivery, or something like that. However, to just randomly show up at my door trying to sell something, or for some other crap is annoying.

I really hate that there is a window next to my door, because it would be better if I could see who was at the door, but they couldn't see me. It's my home after all, and I think I should be entitled to my privacy. I think the builder who designed these homes was an idiot.

My folks, and I are probably the only people in the neighborhood here with big, steel security doors, it's more of a West Coast thing. I would feel better though if I had a big dog. I also wanna get a little camera for the door.

There is a fancy, yet most likely expensive solution to this, and that would be one-way glass windows. I have seen these modern and technological windows in various news/recording studios, and if you would like to see the person while still having them not be able to see you, this is a great way to do so. I also like the idea of a security camera recording your front door at all times as well, but try to not make it noticeable to the visitor.

i still live with my family and i'm always expected to open the door since i'm the most out of them who spends their time at home. I don't usually order stuff or expect anyone to visit, and so most of the time the person ringing the doorbell is something a member of my family ordered or of that sort (most of the time they don't tell me in advance). Our front door has like a little area surrounded by two walls from the sides and a room built above, so it's impossible to see who's standing in front of the door; which i despise.

I miss not having a peep hole on my front door. I really love the big metal security door we have though.

I think we're at a point in society where ringing a doorbell is considered bad manners.

Update: i recently installed a peephole on the door, yet that still didn't stop me from anticipating something bad. But at least i can at least see who's gonna murder or rob me now.

I hate when people come to the door. I just want to be left alone. What's even worse is when people knock instead of using the doorbell. The bell is there for a reason.

  • I don't have a doorbell, but I find it very annoying to hear a knock at the door when I'm not expecting anyone, because it tells me that whoever is doing the knocking has blatantly ignored my No Soliciting sign.

Does knocking make you panic, as well? Because one could suggest merely doing away with your doorbell if it's impacting your life so negatively.

knocking is even worse for me, because i'm used to people ringing the doorbell. Knocking would probably mean it's a complete stranger that came for the first time without noticing the doorbell.
