Is it normal that i quit a job that i didn’t even start?

I just went to a job interview at BJ’s two days ago and I was hired on the spot. I was told it was a seasonal job as a cashier that I would be offered. Even though it was only going to last until the end of December, I was still willing to take the job, so I accepted. I even went to my job orientation yesterday. However, as soon as I got home, I found out that I wasn’t going to be able to keep this job because my mom didn’t have anyone to watch my little sister. Today, I was supposed to go to BJ’s and receive some on-the-job training, but I did not present myself for the same reason that I just revealed. Rest assured, I did call the store to notify a club member that I would not be coming in to work because of personal issues and a scholarship that I was awarded at the last minute. Of course, the scholarship claim was a lie, but I needed something legitimate to say. She said it was ok and that she would notify the person who needed to know this information. I even asked her if I needed to return the shirts, but she wasn’t sure, so she told me to call a woman named Jennifer to find out. It may be needless to say, but I’m going to feel weird about showing my face in the store and the area surrounding the store for a while.

    I'm sure it happens all the time with seasonal work. Just don't let your guilt get to you. Make sure you return the uniform and thank them for the opportunity. Who knows, you may need them this time next year and if you are professional about it, you won't have burned any bridges.

      Thanks for the encouragement. I will definitely return the shirts as a courtesy and show my appreciation tomorrow. Hopefully, I will be able to work there the next time I apply.

    So you didn't even do any actual work and you are worried about quitting? They probably see that on a weekly basis.

    I know the place I work, out of three new hires -

    One will quit during training phase.
    One will last a couple weeks.
    One will last anywhere from a few months to several years.

    Do not be afraid to show your face there though. It is not like you ruined a long standing reputation. No one will probably even recognize you.
    I think you are blowing things out of proportion.

    Yes, totally normal. You handled it fine. Return the shirt with a smile. Sounds like they are unfortunate to lose you as an employee.

      After all that time of good service, yeah they are unfortunate to lose him. It will be a pain trying to replace him.

    BJ's is an enormous company with about 25,000 employees. When it comes down to it, workers are just cogs in the huge machine that makes the company money, and you shouldn't worry about what happened. It's not like you set out deliberately to waste their time or defraud them.

    It would be different if it was some little mom and pop store that had to spend a lot of time and money finding a new employee and they were counting on you, but huge corporations don't care about you, and you shouldn't care about their feelings. You definitely shouldn't feel awkward about spending more money there.
