Is it normal that i refuse to watch/read the news because it depresses me?

For the past couple years I just won't watch the news anymore because all it talks about is killing, murder, rape, child abductions, epidemic diseases. It makes me so depressed I just don't want to get up in the mornings.

So I quit watching it and now my mood has improved a lot, and I treat people nicer as well. I think seeing all the horrible things on the news makes me too suspicious of everyday people.

I stop my family when they want to discuss something depressing they saw on tv, and they tell me I "need to know what's going on in the world". But I think if it's making me so depressed I can't eat or finish my work at my job, then I shouldn't watch it anymore. I hate hearing terrifying things literally EVERY SINGLE DAY.

Am I normal?

FOX news is terrible. Fear sells. Try BBC world news they have a wider verity of stories they cover. Recently they spotlighted a story about a Chinese man who donated his stem cells to save a young boys life in the UK. Heartwarming. Not all news is bad.

Yes, normal. I stopped watching news programs a year ago for the same reasons.

Yes, in a way. It may also be a sign of clinical depression. You might want to speak to your doctor about feelings of despair and anti-depressive medication.
In the meantime, Chin up and "Pack up all your worries in your old kit bag and smile, just smile (UK WW2 soldiers' song)".
