Is it normal that i sleep with my eyes open sometimes?

I will occasionally wake up in the middle of the night with terrible pain in one or both of my eyes and, according to my eye doctor, it is correlated to my sometimes sleeping with my eyes open. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do to stop this from happening?

    No, it's not normal, and there's actually a name for it: nocturnal lagophthalmos. You need to see a doc; they might even recommend taping your eyes shut.

    Strange. I guess that could happen, but one would have to open their eyes while asleep.
