Is it normal that i think anti bullying has gone to far?

There’s so much focus on anti bullying in schools now and I think it’s completely unnecessary. People treat it as if being called names can have a life long effect on you. If people are seriously killing themselves over bullying then at that point we should just let natural selection take its course. I was bullied (physically and mentally) all through out high school and I didn’t go home and slit my wrists because I realised that the day after I left school it wouldn’t matter what so ever. Kids have been nasty to each other since time immemorial, so why is it now something massive that can ruin your whole life?

Bullying affects people in different ways. Especially people that are mentally ill.
My brother was/is mentally ill and was bullied a lot and it hurt me so much to know that was happening to him. I cried for him. He was teased and guys actually pushed him around and hit him.
The bullying made him have very many violent thoughts that he told me about because we were very close.
He did eventually get very angry one time and threw a book in one of the guys face and punched the other one in the face very hard.
They left my brother alone after that.
So I am against bullying completely.
Most mass shooters were mentally ill and were bullied.

Well your brother learned an age old lesson: Stand up to your bullies and they will more than likely stop fucking with you after that.

My brother is a very strong person physically. The only reason why they left him alone was because he really fucked up the guys face when he punched him.
If it was a person that was not as strong they would still be bullied even if they fought back.

Most school shooters don't value human life, or at the very least don't value their targets. Being bullied is not a prerequisite for a mass shooting nor will it ensure one.
Rule one of life: learn when to stop giving a fuck. People who can't learn that have very few options: Cry over spilled milk, confide in other, or seppuku.

I will agree with you with not giving a fuck. Having that mind set will make life easier but it’s hard for some people to think that way.

Most mass shooters were already planning on killing themselves and had suicidal thoughts for a long time.
Usually people like that just kill themselves but you have the few that think “if I’m going to kill myself then I should also get my revenge on the world first.”
Not all mass shooters kill themselves but a lot of them do.
I will also add that I’m not defending mass shooters at all. I just noticed a trend with them. They were usually mentally ill and were bullied.

Typically mentally fit people don't murder their entire school, so yes i do agree.

Maybe collectively we as a society have grown tired of assholes.
I would imagine any anti-bullying policies would upset anyone prone to such behavior. Otherwise why worry about it.

Yes, but who defines bullying? The victim? A third party? The perpetrator?

Self awareness is indeed a wonderful thing. However, those who are prone to acts of that type of behavior, regardless of their understanding of self, tend not to care for such a discernment. As such, i invite you to take the tour starting at the corner of "i am rubber you are glue" drive and "i don't give a damn" avenue.

See, you've narrowed down your search already. Obviously it's not the bullies themselves so we are left with the rest of society and what it deems acceptable behavior. Obviously you give a damn or you wouldn't have asked about it in the first place.

You can care about one thing and not care about another. I could be lazy and reference the holocaust as a citation of a time when society's definition of acceptable behavior is not even close to what's good for everyone, but i just did so...

If the rest of society defines bullying, is the concept of individual choice invalid or merely unacceptable; given the choice between conforming and being in the wrong? And is a society that prevents bullies from harming others really better off for having done so, or would society do better to let the individual learn how to deal with the stress and offer ways strengthen themselves rather than attempt to silence the offender, also known as "bullying the bully"?

I think anti-bullying is a noble cause, and yes bullies should be reprimanded if caught.

Big however... you simply WON'T stamp it out. Ever. It's something that's going to happen and these people will bully over any little "funny" thing they can pick out.

The best antidote is to teach a kid self-worth and to stand up for themselves. Nothing stops a bully in their tracks faster than picking on the wrong one, that one who won't take their shit and claps back. That's an important life skill anyway. You're not gonna get anywhere once you go out into the adult world, if you're still a doormat who can't be cutthroat. I had to learn that too, being picked on in school.

      That's definitely important.

I saw this the other day and thought it was quite interesting. I've always believed (and studies have shown) that many if not most issues can be helped or avoided by early childhood intervention. And encouraging the development of empathy in young children is a big thing.

I always find it ironically amusing in a very dark way when someone espouses hard-line social Darwinism and justifies it by saying that they were treated like shit and coped, so everyone else should just harden the fuck up.

I'd suggest that your lack of empathy and understanding is a direct consequence of how you were treated at school. So, contrary to what you believe, the bullying and name-calling you were subjected to did indeed have a long-term impact on the person you have become.

I am normally the first person to say that the social pendulum has swung too far and has actually gone the way of counter productivity, but in the case of bullying it has not.

Adolescence is a hard time for everyone and kids can be so cruel. Camera phones, photo editing, memes, social media, etc. provide a non-physical venue to humiliate people that never existed years ago.

It doesn't matter how much you have going for you, if a person or a group decide to ruin you socially, you're in for a world of shit. And it can be a horrible world. Young people are developing and humans are a social species so these things can matter a huge deal.

Normally I'd be with you and say, "man/woman up. Don't be a pussy.." But it is different now. It is too easy, too efficient, and too permanent to just brush aside. The days of fighting it out after school, or rumors vanishing through hearsay and time- are gone. Don't be cruel.

    Bad families produce bad children.
    Bad children bully other children.
Those bullies have children and continue the cycle.

Bad families =/= poor families. It can be any family with abusive people in it.

The solution is to not throw anti-bully campaigns in children's faces in hope that the bullying stops, because where is that anti-bullying support when they get home to their abusive drunk or high mom/dad/grandma/grandpa/Aunt and or Uncle; sometimes sisters or brothers? No one is there. Where does the frustration of feeling helpless go? Where can this child exercise the brutal acts he/she learned at home? In the place they're at everyday 90% of the time; at school.

All these band-aid solutions are not building toward the future. We're not teaching children what life really is, what really happens in it and how to deal with it. We need teach more than just academics in schools to prepare children for teenage years, and teenagers to young adults.

Yes and no. I think anti bully campaigns have their heart in the right place, but they don't get to the root of the problem. If you mow over a dandelion, it will only grow back because it's root is deep.

Getting picked on occasionally, that is normal, happens to everyone. Repeatedly picking on one kid and making their life hell, is wrong, and we need to figure out what drives kids to do this.

It could be that they are unhappy/abused themselves and take it out on others. It could be that said bully is an emerging psychopath/sociopath and just doesn't care. The point is, telling them "don't bully" does jack and all for them or their victims.

I think it is tragic when a child kills themselves over something like this, because it's a waste. It's a permanent solution to a temporary problem. If it is truly that bad their parents should have pulled them from that school long beforehand, if they have any inkling of what's going on.

This could also be mitigated by not giving smart phones to children, but that's a matter of opinion.

I agree everyone is bullied to some degree, but when entire groups makes 7 years of your life a living, isolated, hell. When you have no one to talk to, when you can't even have social media because assholes deface it ruthlessly, come see me.

When you have never gone to a dance, had a boyfriend, hung out with a group, even been smiled at for almost half your life, come see me.

When you get sick to your stomache and have to endure panic attacks just to get an eduction, let me know.

When your only friend in the world you grew up with won't even talk to you because they'll be ostracize too, then feel free to post your stuff again.

Until then, I feel you don't really know what being bullied is.

    • I was bullied all through high school. I never went to dances or had friends or a boyfriend. But when people are getting bullied there’s usually a reason for it and they just have to learn to sort out whatever weird thing they’re doing that attracts bullies.

That's true, but occasionally it can be a minor event that occurred in childhood, that has since been recified, but assholes don't let go of.

Or perhaps a person is just ugly by highschool standard and they can't change that.

I seriously don't know why you are upset with anti bullying campaigns because the only argument you made is that it's the person who is being bullieds fault. Not true.

Your statement "let natural selection take it's course", shows how heartless you really are.

If you'd argued that zero tollerence can destroy lives then I would agree. Most people bully and get bullied in order to learn.

The fact that you are victim blaming means you have some different agenda.

People commit suicide because they can't tolerate the present. Not because they can't rationally see something changing at an indeterminate time in the future. But because they can't handle waiting for that time to come.

        Comment Hidden ( show )

        • But most of the time it is the victims fault. For example, I was bullied because I was shy and a pushover. I learned to not be and the bullying stopped. If we continue to punish strength and reward weakness then the next generation will grow up weak.

When was the last time you saw a bully pick on someone stronger than themselves, to prove how great they were?

It's not punishing strength it's punishing cowards.

People who never grow out of being bullies, usually always fail at life, because they never push themselves against greater opponents, and rarely suceed after high school.

You can't speed up natural selection. Just ask Hitler.

How the fuck was it your fault that you weren't socially outgoing and an obnoxiously assertive asshole?

That was the person you were. The cretinous mob passed judgement and found you wanting, so all the insecure, self-hating dickheads decided to unload their frustrations and anxieties about who _they_ were on you -- that year's chosen scapegoat.

You may want to believe that the experience didn't affect you negatively, but what happened is that you accepted the collective idiocy of the mob, changed your behaviour to fit in with crowd, and now you're saying that anyone who can't cope with bullies should be tossed to the wolves.

Yeah, you're right that there's always a reason for it: the reason is that some people are bullies and can sense other people's vulnerabilities. There's no valid reason or excuse for bullying, not ever and you sound like you're either an apologist for bullies or a bully yourself

        Comment Hidden ( show )
  • Because some bullying goes so far it becomes abusive. Try being assaulted every day or being told you’re worthless and to go kill yourself every single day. After a while anyone would probably get suicidal.

I think everyone gets bullied at school do they not?
Unless children spend their lives in some impervious bubble they are going to experience it to some degree whatever safeguards & educational programmes are put in place.

Bullying exists in everyday life be it at work, on the sports field, even at home.

Companies monster other corporations, governments bully other governments. That is just the way the world is, sadly.

Maybe in some cases. Someone calls you or whomever a name maybe once or twice - deal with it and move on. BUT, if they continue, make you feel uncomfortable and constantly mess with you, it's bullying and no one likes that. Why should anyone have to deal with it? They shouldn't. Anyone who bullies knows what they are doing.

That's true, freaks need to learn from a young age when they are acting inappropriately, and I say this as one myself, observe how people react to you makes it easier to blend in, They should teach confidence instead, then you will get rid of a lot of bullies that way too.

As a high school educator myself i feel that the term bullying is out dated the correct way to put it is constructive criticism. For e.g their is an over weight student in my school and i use the term fatty. Some people think this is insensitive and that i should call him by his real name. But then they aren't headmasters of a school so what would they know
