Is it normal that i turn the radio on for my dog when she'll be alone all day?

She barks a lot so I have to keep her in my room when I leave so she's not running around barking. I set a blanket over my bed and put a few treats on top, then I'll hide treats around the room for her to find. She likes looking out the window so she can do that and I put on the radio (sometimes TV) to drown out some of the noises outside. I set it to classic rock, I think she likes it.

My mom used to put on homeward bound for her dog when she left and the fuckin dog would actually watch it. God I miss that dog.

I have a horse that we actually have a radio hanging outside his stall. We would play music, and he finally got smart enough where if he didn't like a song he would stick his head out and actually play with the tuner to change stations, and would even turn the volume all the way down at night if we forgot to shut it off. He loves listening to rock 'n roll.

I think that your dog would enjoy it because it might then feel like its not alone. I would say it is definitely not a bad thing!

I work at a kennel and we always play the radio nice and softly for when we close and leave for the night, I imagine it calms them because the few times I come by after 8 or so to check on an elderly animal that's not doin too good everythings nice and silent.

It's normal. It makes them feel like there is someone home, they don't feel so alone.

It's normal at my home we leave a light and/or TV on for my dog and upstairs a light is on for the cats, especially if we aren't sure what time we will be home, I treat my pets like family and knowing they can't turn a light on I don't want to leave them in the dark.

We do this for our parrot if we're going to be out all day. She does seem to enjoy singing along and we hope it adds a bit of stimulation for her.

Hiding treats for her sounds like a really great idea to stop her getting either bored or anxious! I definitely think it's normal to think about keeping your pet happy when you're out - all responsible pet owners should :)

That's completely normal, it can reduce the level of separation anxiety your dog feels by quite a bit! And it's nice to see somebody that actually treats there dog right instead of locking them in a cage for 12 hours a day!

I am the one who voted no...and i'll tell you why. your dog is not actually listening to it in any way. If anything you should leave it off so she will be able to hear better if someone breaks into your house...she might scare them off. Put it this way, you know how sometimes you'll have your radio BLASTING and you look over at your dog and she is sound asleep? You really think she is listening to it if she can sleep through that much noise?

It's just to make the dog feel the same way as if his owner was home. The dog can still hear what's going on outside or around the house.

I think dogs would like classic rock too. No jazz, though. You'd have a Cujo on your hands!
