Is it normal that i want to wait a year before applying for an art college?

My grades are about C average, (they used to be really good, with a 3.7, but since 10th grade year I have been getting mostly C's) and my artistic skills are very good, but not where I want them to be.

To better my chances on getting in, and being more satisfied with myself, I was thinking of waiting a year to focus on my art, skill, style, and ultimately specifics on what I want to do and learn when I get into college. I want to do all sorts of things, like: animation, design, one day I would like to make a video game, creative writing (novels mostly), comic books.

I haven't found a major really that can sum all these up so I can get a profound education in all those things so I can do whatever the hell I want when I get out there. My dream is to work for Studio Ghibli, and have my own anime, but I want to do countless other things.

I just want to expand and focus on my art so I can be a credible applicant so I can have better success getting in, and also in my studies. Is this a good idea? Do some art students do this?

I'm only in tenth grade but I'm in the same boat really.(use to get great grades but now mostly C's and loves art but needs improvment) I think it's normal to want to work on your skills first but you will be doing that at school just try to get in b/c sometimes when people take breaks from college they don't actually end up going. so just try to get in. but if you want to wait go to conventions get a table at an artist alley meet other artist they will help you get on your feet :)

It sounds like you've got this all planned out pretty well. I think it sounds like a great idea! Go when you feel you are most ready. You have the answer to your own question, and yeah it's normal.

Sorry I keep pressing submit on accident. To avoid getting hugely in debt for a degree, you may want to find ways to build a good reputation in the years that it would take you to get a four year degree. You may want to avoid a graphic arts degree. Mostly everyone goes after that so you would be a piece of hey in a hey stack.
