Is it normal that i wish i were a basement dweller?

I have a 6 figure job, my wife is a full time professional, and we live in an upper middle class neighborhood. A european vacation with our two kids every summer is the norm. Nevertheless, I find myself wishing I had never married, dropped out of college, and lived in a basement somewhere. I could make lattes at Starbucks, and come and go as I pleased. The freedom would be so sweet. IIN?

It's liberating and depressing at the same time.

  • I have to agree with this on some level. I have plenty of money, especially with no kids, a decent enough job, and a nice house. I still sometimes envy that lifestyle of doing absolutely nothing.

Why don't you try it in your next vacation instead of going to Europe? I bet you'll hate it

I'm with ya. I've thought about ditching the big house, and much of the crap I've accumulated, and getting a little cabin by a stream in the woods.

    • The Unabomber (Ted Kaczinsky) had a Ph.D. like you do. This is what he did.

        • Hahaha. Just helping you to explore all your options. Actually, that stream sounds quite idyllic. You could plan your surgical interventionism in peace.

Obligations are what give our life structure and purpose. Without them, we're nothing.

It is sometimes true that structure and purpose is positive, but sometimes the stress and personal oppression from these obligations destroys one's health. Unless, of course, you have vices to relieve the stress.

Being a basement dweller sucks, trust me. I broke my hand two years ago and was forced to take off of work at my manual labor position. Its fun for a day, but it becomes incredibly boring and you have no money for fun.

    • But you have freedom.

If you consider house arrest freedom. All I could do was watch T.V. or go online. There was no money to ever go out and enjoy myself doing anything else. There are no options when you're forced to stay home. Instead of taking your vacation to Europe next year, just sit at home if you want it so badly.
