Is it normal that modern architecture makes me depressed?

I absolutely despise the way we build nowadays. Those massive, boxy buildings create a sterile, monotonous, soulless, gloomy environment, IMO. I'm pretty sure that I'm not the only one who feels depressed by these buildings.

Brutalist architecture is trash, I hate modern, and despise minimalism.

Gothic is sexy, Art Deco is hot, Victorian can be cool.

I do too! I also hate when really nice natural woodwork is painted over. Such a waste!

You're not the only one at all. I could write a book about it (and am probably going to, lol). This style being everywhere and replacing the nice places, with everything cool and full of character being erased and destroyed to make way for this ugly BS, is a big pet peeve of mine.

I don't like the modern look, either. I'm so sick of the "blah" minimalist trend, as well as everything being painted gray, white, and black. I don't really like stainless steel appliances all that well either (too industrial for me, plus they show EVERYTHING), and can't stand the vinyl plank "wood" flooring that is currently so popular (I apologize to anyone who likes it, but that's the ugliest flooring I've ever seen, particularly in that rotten looking gray everyone seems to choose). All of the architecture and interior design trends are just so boring right now. Not to mention a lot of it is of much cheaper quality than what is seen in many older buildings and houses. I've been disappointed to see so much particle board "woodwork" and cabinets, even in high dollar homes. They look nothing like real wood (much like the vinyl plank "wood" flooring) and have such a cheap look to them.

I actually much prefer a "dated" look that many people hate, lol. I was incredibly lucky to find a house that was elderly owned and everything was mostly original and decades old, but extremely well cared for. I got all sorts of unsolicited advice to remodel/update/"modernize" it, but wouldn't in a million years! I have the most gorgeous natural woodwork (including real wood paneling and solid wood cabinets with a really nice decorative trim on them), brickwork, fireplace, beautiful wallpaper, and really cool patterned carpet. There are tons of warm tones and nice colors throughout my home, and everything is of high quality.

I love how older things are so much more ornate than what you can find today (I certainly hope the minimalist trend goes away, because I'm so sick of everything being so plain and boring; finding something pretty is like pulling teeth!), and I also love natural woodwork and brick, NOT painted over. Quality wood and brick work has such a natural beauty to it and it's such a shame when people paint it some boring, monotone color (especially gray). I love how the older fixtures and hardware are all beautiful and patterned, rather than those ugly straight bar stainless steel cabinet handles and "boob" light fixtures that have replaced them.

I agree though, the modern look is pretty depressing. I've always thought gray was a depressing color and it seems like that is the only color anything is being painted anymore (besides black, white, or some other very neutral color, usually with a very grayish tone to it), and I hate the blocky and minimalist looks, too. They have torn down and rebuilt or remodeled several buildings near be that formerly had nice atmospheres with nice colors and features, only to be replaced with gray, a really ugly muddy gray-brown, and very blocky styles. I just think it is horribly ugly, and all of the character has been erased in favor of just a boring shell with no charm or interest whatsoever. They actually just finished tearing down a place I absolutely loved in order to put a cookie cutter gray building in its place, and I HATE it.

I love wallpaper and wish it would make a comeback (but not in the office style with the goofy shapes in neutral colors; I mean like pretty floral wallpaper in nice complimentary colors)! My house is full of the stuff and I love it (despite the fact that I've been told to paint over it to "modernize" it, and I can't think of a worse idea, not to mention that I've seen how awful it looks when people try to paint over wallpaper).

There is wonderful modern architecture out there... However, it tends to cost more than the kind that you are complaining about... Why its not as popular..

Agree! The school I work at decided to change and renovate from whimsical into a cold black-gray-orange environment in order to "keep up with times and modernize". It looks and feels like a prison. I've been researching school architecture around the world recently and have found some really interesting contemporary designs that cater to children's needs. I don't think adults need stern-looking buildings either. Why does current architecture want us all dead inside?

    • Can be beautiful and simple at the same time tho. Just add colors, leaning roofs and some window spruces.
